  • Undergraduate Internship Enrichment Fund: The College of Health and Human Development will be offering funds to provide assistance for undergraduate students in the College who are completing a credit-bearing field experience, practicum, or internship as part of their course of studies. Fund expenditures shall conform to University policy and may include, but not necessarily limited to, tuition costs, scholarships, housing costs, transportation and parking, and professional attire. Students eligible for this funding may be completing their internship in Spring 2019, Summer 2019, and Fall 2019. Students interested in receiving this funding should apply by April 1 at https://hhd.psu.edu/undergraduate-internship-enrichment-fund.   • The College of Health and Human Development will be offering Summer Research Funds for undergraduates to complete research under the direction of a faculty mentor for summer 2019. Funds may be used for student expenses and project costs. Students interested in requesting this funding can fill out the form at https://hhd.psu.edu/summer-undergraduate-research-grants or submit all materials via mail/email to Heather Zimmerman, Administrative Assistant to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, 344 Health and Human Development Building, or emailed to hdh3@psu.edu. Please note faculty supervisor requirements below. Students must be enrolled in a College of HHD major or be a premajor HHD student. Deadline is Feb 18. Applicants will be notified by the end of March 2019 regarding funding decisions.

  • The Fund for American Studies is accepting applications for the Summer 2019 Academic Internship Program in Washington, DC.  The comprehensive program includes academic coursework through George Mason University, an internship placement, furnished housing, guest lectures, as well as a variety of opportunities for networking and professional development.   • Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) offers female college students opportunities to learn about policy issues. Their next seminar is on Congress and leadership.   • Global Health Minor: The Global Health Minor is a competitive minor, open to any Penn State student who is enrolled at the University Park campus and who has declared a major field of study. During your work in the Global Health Minor, you will complete a five -week supervised fieldwork experience in Ecuador, South Africa, or Tanzania. This experience, along with course work, will help you develop the capacity to think, talk, and write critically about global health issues and challenges and help you prepare for occupations and graduate programs that demand global thinking, understanding and experience. 
    • Advising: Students who are interested in applying for the Global Health Minor should schedule an advising appointment to meet with the Global Health Minor program director, Dr. Dana Naughton. Thirty-minute advising sessions may be arranged by contacting the staff of the Department of Biobehavioral Health at 814-863-7256. Application materials will be provided to students at the time of meeting. Applications are due February 15, 2019 and are distributed to students only after their meeting with the program director.
  • Summer Founders Program — Deadline February 15. WANT $10K TO WORK ON YOUR STARTUP OVER THE SUMMER?  Apply to the Summer Founders Program at the Happy Valley LaunchBox: Team must have at least 1 co-founder who is a full-time Penn State student in good standing (graduating seniors are eligible to apply).   • The Autism Science Foundation invites applications from highly qualified undergraduates interested in pursuing basic and clinical research relevant to autism spectrum disorders during the summer. Deadline is Feb 18. The proposed research must be scientifically linked to autism or a closely related field.   • Pink Zone–On Sunday, February 10, join the College of Health and Human Development, the College of Nursing, and the HHD Alumni Society in supporting breast cancer awareness by attending our Pink Zone 2019 pre-game reception and the Penn State Lady Lions Pink Zone Basketball game against the Michigan Wolverines.   Tip Off: 2:00 p.m.

  • McKinsey Freshman Diversity Leadership Academy: Apply by February 28, 2019 The McKinsey Freshman Diversity Leadership Academy aims to support talented Black, African American, Hispanic, Latino, and/or Native American college freshmen in their professional growth. Through a 1.5-day program, students will be able to build their leadership, team problem-solving, and case preparation skills. In addition, they will learn more about the management consulting industry, careers at McKinsey, and our application process. The event will take place on April 5th – 6th , 2019, in Norwalk, CT.   • Be a STAR: NIA summer research training program application period opens A unique research experience: the NIA Intramural Research Program’s Summer Training in Aging Research (STAR) Program. Each year, NIA’s STAR Program-part of the broader NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) in Biomedical Research-attracts a diverse group of applicants from high schools, colleges, medical schools, and graduate programs. Whether or not they’ve decided on a research career, STAR participants get to work directly with NIA intramural investigators and postdoctoral fellows while gaining cutting-edge scientific and lab skills that can boost a multitude of career paths related to the biology of aging.The application period for the 2019 NIH SIP is now open. The application deadline is March 1, 2019; 11:30 p.m., Eastern time. You can apply for a summer internship online through the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education website.   • The Office of Student Activities is currently accepting nominations/applications for the Service and Leadership & Student Organization Awards which will be presented at the Student Affairs Awards Ceremony this spring.  These awards recognize individual students and organizations for their outstanding leadership and service to the University.  For a full listing of descriptions and nomination/application links, please click here.   Applications/Nominations must be submitted online, by Sunday, March 3rd at midnight for consideration.   • Opportunity for undergraduate researchers to participate in an American Heart Association funded summer program (Summer Translational Cardiovascular Science Institute). This program is available to undergraduate students with a demonstrated interest in cardiovascular science who have completed more than 60 credits and have a grade point average of 3.25 or greater. The STCSI will fund up to ten undergraduate students to conduct research related to cardiovascular disease, focusing in particular on the cellular mechanisms of cardiovascular disease pathology, the determinants of cardiovascular disease risk across the lifespan, and the development of cardiovascular device technology to address disease. This research will be conducted during the summer 2019 (10 weeks from May 28 to August 2) under the direction of one or more faculty members.A stipend of $4,000 will be provided for each student. There are a number of participating faculty listed on the site but other faculty can participate. 
  •  The Penn State Clinic Intern Program provides undergraduate students who have an interest in pursuing a career in medicine an opportunity to interact professionally with patients and medical staff in thelinical Services department. As an intern, students conduct patient intake exams and assist clinical staff. Volunteering gives students a first-hand understanding of the dynamics of the health care system and enhances communication skills with patients and members of the health care team. Volunteers earn 4-6 credits over two semesters for participating in the Clinic Intern Program. Program interns earn about 100 patient contact hours over the two semesters and may return to volunteer for additional semesters if they choose.   • State of State is a student-run organization at Penn State University, committed to facilitating a dialogue within the university community about important Penn State-related issues. This dialogue culminates every year in a spring conference at which we bring together student, faculty, administration, alumni, and community leaders to speak about a variety of Penn State and State College topics, ranging from student life to mental health to town-and-gown relations. Our goal is to bring together passionate change-makers who can make our community stronger and more successful.   • A new semester long residential program, Study Away Pittsburgh, is a good alternative learning experience for junior and senior level students. Study Away Pittsburgh is an affordable, transformative, urban educational experience for Penn State students in fall 2019. Modeled after Study Abroad, students are placed with community partners, and participate in an in-depth, community based learning experience in sustainability while residing in Pittsburgh for the entire semester. The community partners that students are placed with include non-profit advocacy groups, governmental agencies, multidisciplinary design firms, health care providers, socially responsible businesses and many more.   • Interested in substance abuse?  Save the Date for Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse Annual Conference. CCSA will host an annual conference that brings together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and the public to discuss significant and emerging problems in combating substance abuse. Our upcoming national conference, Envisioning a Future Free from Addiction: Research, Programs, and Practice to Prevent Substance Abuse, will be held Monday, April 29, 2019 on Penn State’s University Park campus.

  • Take a Professor to Lunch (or Coffee or Ice Cream): The HHD Dean’s Office will pay for lunch, coffee, or ice cream for up to five HHD students and one HHD faculty member at any one of the University’s on-campus eating establishments. As one of the most popular colleges at Penn State, we know how hard it can be to get to know your professors in our majors. AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS
  • The Undergraduate Exhibition All Penn State undergraduate students, regardless of campus location, are eligible to enter the Undergraduate Exhibition.  The 2019 exhibition will feature different presentation types within two different time slots:
    • Engagement Experience Poster Exhibition (11 am – 1 pm) Posters highlighting student achievements in engaged learning experiences (NOT a research poster)
    •  Undergraduate Exhibition for Research, Inquiry, or Creative Activity (4 – 7 pm) Traditional research posters
    • Oral research presentation— 5 minute presentation for disciplines or projects for whom traditional research posters are not traditionally used
    • Performance – 5 minute performance (music, writing, poetry reading, dance, theatre, etc.)

  • Undergraduate Research Conference Travel Support  Penn State undergraduates who are presenting the results of their research or creative work at national or regional professional conferences may request financial support to defray the costs of attendance at the conference. 
  • HHD Small Project Grants Nomination deadline: March 15–The Small Project Grant program provides students and faculty members with an additional source of funding for projects that benefit the University community and/or enhance students’ experiences in the College of Health and Human Development. Such projects may include, but are not limited to, student organization service projects or events, undergraduate or graduate student research not pertaining to a thesis or dissertation, and projects that promote collaboration among students and faculty members.
  • The Outstanding Adult Student Award recognizes an exceptional adult learner or student veteran at University Park who has overcome obstacles while furthering his or her education. Nominees should balance multiple roles, serve as a role model for other students and achieve academically.For more information about the award, including selection criteria, or to submit a nomination, please review the application.Applications for the 2019 Outstanding Adult Student Award are now open.   • As part of continued efforts to engage the Penn State community in discussions around diversity and inclusion, the Center for Spiritual and Ethical Development, along with the Bahá’í Campus Association, will host a screening of the documentary, “Me, The Other” followed by a discussion with the director of the film, Shidan Majidi, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Freeman Auditorium of the HUB-Robeson Center. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but seating is limited and can be reserved by calling the Center for Spiritual and Ethical Development at 814-865-6548. “Me, The ‘Other'” is a documentary film created in less than five months about a diverse group of students living in Washtenaw County in southeast Michigan. 
  • The Arts and Design Research Incubator brings together faculty, students and community around projects that connect to the arts.  Interested in how health, recreation, and other HHD fields connect to music, dance, and other arts fields? Check out ADRI! ADRI projects are typically collaborative and interdisciplinary in nature, push methodological boundaries, link research and teaching, make innovative use of technology, engage with university-wide research initiatives and priorities, and have the potential to garner national and international recognition.     • Rhythmic Connections, Thursday, February 14, 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. Led by Christiana Usenza, Ethnomusicologist, and Michele Dunleavy, Associate Professor of Dance, School of Theatre Rhythmic Connections introduces foundational drumming techniques and traditions, along with foot, hand, and body percussion. Participants will experience playing as an individual while contributing to the group dynamic and musical texture. No prior experience is required, and instruments will be provided.   • Jonathan Haidt, New York Times bestseller and the Thomas Cooley Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University’s Stern School of Business, will present a lecture on “The Three Terrible Ideas Weakening Gen Z and Damaging Universities and Democracies” Feb. 21 at 5 p.m. in 100 Thomas, the first event in the McCourtney Institute for Democracy’s spring 2019 speaker series.   • The Center for Global Studies will present a film screening of “Honor Diaries” at 7 p.m. on Feb. 13 in the Foster Auditorium, Paterno Library, on the University Park campus of Penn State followed by a panel discussion. “Honor Diaries” is a 60-minute film that explore themes of violence against women in honor-based societies, such as killings, forced marriages, and lack of access to education. The film portrays nine women’s rights activists working to bring safety and equality to women in both the Muslim and non-Muslim world and to provide a platform for women to address human rights violations.All members of the community are welcome to attend this free event.This screening is part of the Arabic Film Series and is co-sponsored by the Penn State University Libraries.

  • ENTREPRENEURSHIP
    • Arts Business Idea Competition 2019 Guidelines Who Can Apply? This competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students from any major and any Penn State campus. The only requirement is that the business idea/concept is arts-based. Free-lance, non-profit, for profit, hybrid, and small or large-scale ideas are welcome. Inform Dr. Gangi of your intent to apply as soon as you decide to enter the competition by sending an email to jjg27@psu.edu. Submit a pdf document of your business plan to Dr. Gangi via email by 11:59pm February 25, 2019. Finalists will be announced via email by March 18, 2019. Final Round. Four finalists will present (15min) for a panel of judges at Penn State – University Park, starting at 5pm on April 2, 2019.     • INC. U! What is it? INC. U is a year-end “shark tank like” pitch competition to find the Top 6 Undergraduate student owned companies (undergraduates must own 50% or more of the company) to compete for $30,000+ in investment awards. Students compete in an initial video pitch competition and then the Top 6 companies are selected to pitch their companies to a distinguished panel of judges during an hour-long television show called “The Investment.”   Click HERE for a link to see last season’s show that we taped in April/2018.   This year’s competition deadline for Video submissions is February 10, 2019.     • The TechCelerator Model Works! Just ask any one of the nearly 100 companies that have successfully launched.  These startups have created nearly 200 jobs and generated more than $14M in revenue. Have you ever wondered what it would take run your own startup?  Ben Franklin’s TechCelerator @State College is inviting local entrepreneurs, undergrads, grad students, Post-Docs, Professors and university researchers to participate in their next 10-Week Business Startup Accelerator. The weekly classes will run on Tuesdays – March 19, 2019 – May 14, 2019, from 2:00 – 5:00 P.M. with Graduation on May 21st from 2:00 – 7:00. Plus, weekly 1-hour mentoring sessions.
