Mid-semester Evaluation Beginner’s Guide

Mid-semester evaluation is a way to collect feedback from students in your course.  It allows you to evaluate success and need for improvement from your teaching strategies and technology uses in the class.  Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence suggests the use of midsemester evaluation as a formal assessment and recommends different survey options that instructors can use to collect student midsemester feedback.  Check out the link below for more information about midsemester feedback.

Collecting Mid-semester Evaluation in Canvas

In Canvas, you can use Canvas Quiz to create online surveys to quickly collect feedback from your students. If you are interested in creating a mid-semester evaluation survey in your Canvas course(s), here are a few ways you could do.

Option #1:  Manually create surveys in Canvas, check out the instructions How do I create a survey in my course?

Option #2: If you are interested in using the questions in your Canvas course, you may download the Mid-semester Evaluation Canvas package and import it into your Canvas course. Follow the step-by-step instructions below to import Mid-semester Evaluation Example into your course(s).

1. Download Mid-semester Evaluation Canvas package file (right-click and select Save Target As) on your computer.
   Note: You do not need to extract Canvas package file. We will need to import it to your course as a zipped file later.
2. To import Mid-semester Evaluation Canvas package file to your course, go to Settings in your Canvas course.
3. Click Import Course Content link on the right.
   
4. On the Import Content page,
   a. Select QT .zip file for Content Type,
   b. Browse and select Mid-semester Evaluation Canvas package file on your computer
   c. Click Import button
   
5. Once the import is completed, add Mid-semester Evaluation quiz to an appropriate module and publish it. Once it is published, you can ask students to complete it.
   
   Note: By default, the quiz package is unpublished and set to receive anonymous response without due date. If you wish to set a due date as well as available to and from dates, you must modify it accordingly. To customize the questions to fit your course, you may consider deleting and/or adding questions prior to publishing the evaluation.
