What drives people to be successful? To overcome the odds, when everyone around them said they couldn’t do it. What drives individuals to push the limits, to break records, to start companies that change the world? Psychologist would suggest that it is apart of our human nature. Humanistic psychology focuses on human potential, us being able to choose our own destiny.
Shannon Sharpe was eight time Pro Bowl, three time super bowl champion tight end in the 90’s and early 2000’s. What most people don’t know is that Shannon Sharpe grew up dirt poor in Georgia. He said that when he showed up to college, he had one pair of shoes and all his clothes could fit into a backpack. When he was young he told himself that he was going to be a great football player. He chose his destiny; he believed that he would be successful. Even though most people doubted him, he was drafted in the 7th round of the NFL draft. Broncos didn’t expect much from this nobody from Georgia, they drafted him expecting him to be a good number two tight end. Once given the opportunity, the man would become the greatest tight end in league history during his career. He chose his destiny, he followed his dream, he persevered through adversity and came out the other side a Hall of Fame football player.
