I am a senior engineering student that will be done with college and entering the job market after this semester. My introduction to college was a very diverse experience, but it was also an enlightening experience. I am a 2 + 2 student that started off at a commonwealth campus and moved here two years ago. I overcame many obstacles as the only child in the family to move away.
My one true obstacle was realizing that social inequality is a simple reality, but there are no reasons to pay attention to them because possessions do not make a person. When I moved here, I remember seeing a college student driving a Lamborghini and felt rage and jealousy because of the possessions that he had. But I did not realize that did not make the person. It led me to jump to conclusions and generalize about the people that were more fortunate than me. The simple truth is that the method in which a person gains possessions is the true factor in realizing the person they are. Some people work extremely hard to gain a reward such as just a working car, or simply a smartphone. Others are given it but have personalities in which they do not boast or advertise because they understand it is a gift. But some groups of people feel as though they have earned it just by living. This is my thinking because I have observed it from many people not only from this area, but also where I am from. Their entitlement is the main factor in which they choose to build a personality which causes me to generalize about the other groups.
Realizing the errors of my way and the conclusions I have made in life, I choose to find the true personality of a person by talking to them and gaining a perspective on their life rather than simply observing, jumping to conclusions, and feeling jealousy. I feel as though we should all do the same for those that are in this position because jumping to conclusions is poisonous to the mind.
On a lighter note as a senior, I will have a lot of fun with my student loans for the next 10 years of my life and being here was worth it.
