Third-year Medical Student Humanitarian Award
The Doctors Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine will present The Medical Student Humanitarian Award to a Class of 2024 medical student in good standing. The tribute and accompanying $1000 award will be presented in April to the individual and in September publicly at the Kienle Annual Meeting.
Mary Louise Witmer Jones Resident Physician Humanitarian Award
in Memory of Jane Witmer Kienle, M.D.
On her death in 1997, Mary Louise Witmer Jones of Medford, New Jersey, established an endowment to make possible an annual award in memory of her sister, Jane Witmer Kienle, M.D. The purpose of this award is to recognize a Milton S.Hershey Medical Center resident physician. To be eligible, the physician must have completed one year of residencytraining at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and must be continuing residency at this institution for at leastoneadditional year following the award. This tribute and its accompanying $1000 award will be presented in April to theindividual and in September publicly at the Kienle Annual Meeting.
Nurse Humanitarian Award in Memory of Lawrence F. Kienle, M.D.
This award will honor Lawrence F. Kienle, M.D. for the generous support and guidance that he provided to the Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine. To be eligible, the nominee must be a full-time nurse employed at Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center. This tribute and its accompanying $1000 will be granted at the Nursing Week Recognition Ceremony in the spring and in September at the Kienle Annual Meeting.
The humanitarian healthcare provider consistently:
- Demonstrates compassionate caring and concern for her/his patients, fellow healthcare workers, and community
- Demonstrates cultural sensitivity with patients and family members of diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrates empathetic awareness of the patient’s experience of illness
- Practices effective communication and listening skills

- Demonstrates sensitivity to the psychological well-being of patients and colleagues

- Adheres to professional and ethical standards
- Displays personal commitment to self-evaluation and life-long learning
A nomination letter need not address each behavior.
