Greatness Nowhere to be Found.

In Outliers , two individuals were compared. There names were Chris Langan and Robert Oppenheimer. Each were brilliant, very intelligent, and had minds minds like each other. One grew up with everything and one grew up with particularly nothing. One became very successful and one not so much. This really intrigues me. How many people do we have out there that have a world of talent, but do not get noticed or challenged? I would say a lot. So we have a person that becomes successful because of whats around him, the culture that he is in, and how he was raised. Then we have another who doesn’t have the same motivation, that does not get challenged, and is also unknown. This person does not become successful. Robert Oppenheimer had great parents that taught him how to pursue and speak for himself. He had decent people around him that gave him opportunity. Chris was raised from a difficult and poor family. He did not know to speak for himself and just went along with everything that came his way. Everyone expected him to fail and didn’t notice his talents and greatness. Now what if we give Chris the same opportunity that Robert have? Would things have change? I actually think they would have. We would have known Chris to this day of making and inventing something great.

In terms, I kind of feel the same way in some aspect. I’m a person of many talents. One of my talents is football. In high school I wanted to play football, but couldn’t play as much because of my family’s financial situation. Even at that time I felt no-one could stop me in that sport. What if I had played more football in high school? What if I was given the opportunity to play? What would my outcome be today? These are the things that we are still faced with in society. There be potentially someone better that Jordan in basketball; but have have not given the opportunity. What about Tiger Woods or Bill Gates? Are there people out there that are better then them at what they do? These are the things we need to ask ourselves. Even with being good at something, there is always someone that could potentially be better than you. Hopefully more people today now will get noticed and have the opportunity to be great.
