“Little Women,” the classic 1898 novel written by Louisa May Alcott, is on its way to being turned into a modernized film by critically-acclaimed “Lady Bird” director, Greta Gerwig. It is rumored that Gerwig will join forces with her cast members from “Lady Bird,” Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet, as well as Meryl Streep and Emma Stone to star in the film. “Little Women” has had several modernized adaptations, but the most well-known version is the 1994 film starring Winona Ryder. “Little Women” follows the March sisters following the Civil War in America. Columbia Record is set to produce the film and ensure that if the deal settles, production will be immediate due to such a talented group of actors.
This article stood out to me because being a fan of “Little Women”, I am excited to see some of my favorite actors and actresses starring in this new adaptation. It also reminded how in class we talked about the different approaches filmmakers and advertisers in the media use to try and appeal to a certain audience. Although “Little Women” has been previously modified from print to film, the continued modernization of the media will continue to appeal to other viewers. Because so many teenagers in today’s society have grown to love stars such as Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan, they will be interested in viewing the film, not necessarily because they enjoy the content, but because they want to see their favorite stars in action. Therefore, I believe that “Little Women,” because of its long-standing roots, as well as its continued modernization, will appeal to a broad range of viewers. In addition, because Greta Gerwig has moved mountains for women in the film industry and was so successful in directing “Lady Bird,” people will want to see “Little Women” in hopes of it being just as good as her previous film and because they support her advocacy.
I believe that this movie will be very successful and I am excited to see it once it is in the theaters!
