On July 3, 2018, I read an article on Variety.com, which stated, according to a survey for U.S consumers conducted by Wall Street firm Cowen & Co. that Netflix is now the most used and popular form of watching video content, beating out competitors such as YouTube, Hulu, and cable networks.
The survey consisted of 2,500 adults living in the U.S. and when asked which form of video content they most commonly use, 27% voted Netflix, with cable in a close second with 20% of the votes.
Having been a Netflix user for over five years, I can account for that 27%.
This article really stood out to me because within the next few years, due to the increasing demand in online streaming, I believe that Netflix will completely triumph over cable networking and that Netflix will be entirely original content.
Netflix has been successful in many ways, but I think it can be broken down into three C’s: cost, content, and convenience.
The cost of a Netflix ranges from $7.99-13.99 per month, comparing to cable, which can cost around $100 per month. That doesn’t include all of the complications that come with cable.
Netflix continues to perform so highly because of their convenience. When it’s time to buy a television and set it up, it consists of several wires, boxes, long set up processes, and an even higher cost if you hire the company to set it up. Netflix comes with no wires, boxes, and has a very easy set-up process. You can even stream Netflix on the go through your iPad, smartphone, or computer with the ability of multiple people to be watching at the same time. In addition, you can watch your favorite show on-demand where you want and when you want with Netflix, instead of adapting your schedule around the programming schedule on cable.
Lastly, the content. Netflix consists not only of thousands of shows and movies from other networks, but original content as well. The continued production of original content has a budget to spend of $13 billion in 2018. In the second quarter of 2018, 425 hours of original content was added to the site, including “Thirteen Reasons Why” season two and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” season four. Whether you’re in the mood for science fiction, coming-of-age dramas, or pure comedy, Netflix has a wide demographic that continues to please its viewers.
