DISABLED SPORTS EASTERN SIERRA | ADAPTIVE SNOWSPORTS INSTRUCTOR INTERN
Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra (DSES) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing adaptive sports programming and therapeutic recreation for individuals with disabilities. Our programs offer individuals of all ages with any disability the opportunity to enjoy outdoor recreation experiences in the beautiful Eastern Sierra. During the winter season, typically November through April, we provide lessons for alpine skiing and snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and cross-country skiing at Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center. Through the applications of modern adaptive equipment and specialized teaching methodologies, we strive to help anyone with any type of disability achieve their winter outdoor recreation goals.
The adaptive snowsports instructor internship is an integral component to DSES, supporting daily operations and teaching snowsports. Over the course of the winter season, interns develop skillsets that prepare them for roles as snowsports instructors for individuals with disabilities and as team members of a non-profit organization. At the beginning of the season, interns participate in a minimum of two weeks of training focused on personal skiing performance, snowsports instruction, and adaptive instruction. Intermixed with and following training are opportunities to shadow lessons and eventually transition into the role of secondary or assistant instructors. Through ongoing skills assessments and progress check-ins with the supervisor, interns eventually become primary instructors. Interns are introduced to various disciplines of adaptive snowsports including sit-skiing, 3-tracking, 4-tracking, and skiing with visual impairments, hearing impairments, or cognitive disabilities.
In addition to developing professionally as an adaptive snowsports instructor, interns gain skills associated with operating a non-profit organization. Interns are introduced to the daily operations of the organization and trained in various areas such as reserving and booking lessons, communicating with our volunteer base, planning special events, and fundraising. Interns who express interest in developing in any particular area related to non-profit organization operations may request to dedicate additional time to that area.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Enrolled in an accredited college or university program requiring a related and approved internship prior to graduation. The internship must require a minimum of 350 hours.
Motivation/Skill Set:
Candidate should be highly motivated to work in a compassionate environment providing services for the population with disabilities. Strong communication skills are necessary as well as the ability to adapt verbal and non-verbal communication to the individual’s needs and condition(s). Many of our students need physical assistance so having physical strength and flexibility is important.
Experience:
Ideal candidate would have some experience working with people with disabilities, but this is not a requirement. TAPROOT FARM & ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER | EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Taproot Farm and EE Center in Lancaster, NH (located in the beautiful White Mountains) is looking for a part-time Environmental Educator to join the growing team. Taproot is an organization in which relationships are developed – with our food, with the environment, and with each other. Early experiences in nature are precursors to caring for the environment as adults. This can be as simple as walking in the woods or growing our own food. From younger years, Taproot believes activities such as unstructured, imaginative play in nature, gardening, and lovingly preparing wholesome, nutritious meals should be a critical component of education. Additionally, spending time immersed in nature as adolescents and young adults allows us to form life-long relationships with the natural world. Our agricultural and ecological based education programs are at the heart of our mission where we aim to engage learners of all ages by encouraging discovery, inspiring curiosity, and nurturing relationships.
With a focus on food systems and the environment, the Environmental Educator will be a flexible, community-oriented, and enthusiastic team member who enjoys working with children, youth, and adults in a variety of programs in diverse settings, such as local schools, the community garden, local trails, and on our new campus on the Windhover property in Jefferson. Our part-time Environmental Educator will work closely with our Education Team to develop and implement programs that are immersive and connect learners of all ages to nature through, for example, making pine needle tea and building forts during the Farm & Forest Friday program, or starting seeds to plant in the garden with our Homeschool program. We strive to develop creative programming that is engaging and learner led, and look to our education staff to be nurturing and empathetic as they create phenomenological and aesthetic learning experiences such as storytelling or developing a sensory guidebook of herbs. Our current programming includes a nature-based summer camp, a
Homeschool series, and weekly programs at local elementary and pre-schools. We are looking for an enthusiastic, fun, lifelong learner who is excited to help expand our education programming as Taproot continues to grow. Some weekends and evenings may be required to accommodate programs.
