UIWSOM: Summer 2022 Events

The UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) is hosting in-person information sessions with campus tours, virtual applicant workshops, and an on-campus preview day this Summer 2022.  All prospective medical students are welcome to attend.  Please feel free to share with your students.

Information Sessions and Campus Tours

We invite prospective applicants to attend an information session to learn about our Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Master of Biomedical Sciences programs.   During these events, we review admission requirements, application procedures and will provide a student-led campus tour.

Participants may click on their preferred date/time to submit an RSVP and receive additional information on directions and parking.

Virtual Applicant Workshops

The Admissions team will review and share tips about each section of the application.  Topics will include experiences, awards/honors, personal statement, letters of recommendation, the secondary application, as well as the multiple mini interview (MMIs).

Prospective applicants may submit an RSVP to receive the Zoom link information.

UIWSOM Preview Day

This in-person event gives prospective students an opportunity to preview our curriculum, including Small Interactive Group Sessions (SIGS), Large Group Session (LGS), and Structures; participate in a Q&A session with current learners, alumni, and admissions officers. Participants will also learn about Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) via live demonstrations.

Columbia Narrative Medicine Events

Narrative Medicine Rounds are monthly rounds on the first Wednesday of the month during the academic year hosted by the Division of Narrative Medicine in the Department of Medical Humanities and Ethics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. A recording of this Virtual Narrative Medicine rounds will be made available temporarily following the live session only for those registered for the event but who are unable to attend during the live session, but we will not be offering an archived recording of this event. You can also listen to a podcast of past Rounds on iTunes or watch more recent ones on the Narrative Medicine YouTube Channel.

Greetings from VCOM Admissions!

We are excited to announce that 3 of VCOM’s campuses will be hosting a virtual open house soon, with the Louisiana Campus hosting their Open House in person.

Open House is a great opportunity for you and your guests to explore all that VCOM has to offer! We will showcase tours and demonstrations from our Anatomy Lab, Simulation & Technology Center, and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine faculty. We will also host a Student Panel to answer all your questions, and we will share information about our International Missions Program.

We have updated our fall events to include more information sessions/connection opportunities. General information sessions will be an ongoing occurrence from now until December! If you would like to learn more about CUSOM, this will be an excellent opportunity. Attendance and the conversations with our staff, allow us to connect you to the resources you need!

Research Associate Internship opportunity at NYU Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine for Fall 2019 – Spring 2020 (September 1, 2019 – May 31, 2020)

About the program:

The Research Associate (RA) Internship is an innovative volunteer program for enthusiastic and inspired college and post-baccalaureate students. Created by the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine, the internship grants students an opportunity to experience and observe multiple aspects of clinical research. The program consists of clinical and non-clinical research shifts based in the Emergency Department. The program offers the committed student a unique experience to furnish a wealth of knowledge about the numerous options for a career in healthcare. This summer intensive unpaid research internship will expose participants to a diverse spectrum of clinical research investigations occurring in the Emergency Departments of Bellevue Hospital Center, NYU Langone Medical Center, and NYU Brooklyn.

RA interns will develop basic research skills and become an integral part of research projects and grants occurring through the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine. They will be taught how to collect and enter data, and maintain databases. RA interns will participate in laboratory meetings and gain Principal Investigator mentorship and/or shadowing experiences. RA interns will also become oriented to the Institutional Review Board and other Human Subjects courses. This experience permits RA interns to be exposed to new and innovative research, and develop a comprehensive understanding of clinical research.

Commitment:

The RA Internship is a very demanding program and requires a great deal of commitment on the part of the student. Fall-Spring RA interns can expect to work at least two, four-hour clinical shifts and one, two-hour non-clinical shift per week for a total of 10 hours per week during the length of the school year.

RA interns are also expected to attend study meetings when new research studies are starting in the ED.

Shifts take place each day of the week, including weekends, in four-hour time blocks. The first shift is 8am-12pm, and the last is 8pm-12am.

Application Instructions:

We invite applications from mature, committed, and motivated students who fully accept the demands of the RA Internship and have a willingness to participate enthusiastically in all aspects of the program. We encourage applications not only from students with a strong interest in healthcare (aspiring doctors, nurses, nurse-practitioners, physician assistants, clinical psychologists/psychiatrists, and clinical social workers), but also from students who are uncertain about pursuing a career in healthcare. Students who have completed at least one year of undergraduate studies are eligible to apply. Though research experience is preferred, it is not necessary.

To be considered for the Research Associate Internship program, students must submit two letters of recommendation and complete an online application form. May/June Start Date – Full-time Research Assistant at Hershey Orthopedics Department

The Penn State Hershey College of Medicine Orthopedics Department is looking to hire a 1 year, full time research assistant. Ideally the candidate should be interested in entering the field of medicine, applying to medical school,  and hopefully pursuing a career in orthopedics one day.

The job is a full time position for 1 year with benefits included. Research  will include clinical projects, helping in our lab with basic science and biomedical engineering experiments, and shadowing staff in the OR’s and clinic. The goal for the students is to have several publishable projects by the end of the year in addition to obtaining valuable mentoring experience.

With the sequencing of the human genome and availability of high power computational methods and various high through-put technologies, biomedical sciences and medicine are undergoing a revolutionary change. The new field of systems medicine (Personalized Medicine) is the application of systems level approaches and tools to biomedical problems. A defining highlight of this program is a capstone Internship, which allows students to work with some of the most renowned health institutions in the world, such as the NIH and the FDA. This requirement ensures that students will be able to develop prestigious vitae that can vault their education and career to the next level. The Systems Medicine Master’s Program is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in academics, industry, research, medical school and any health-related professions.

Our Year-long M.S. program offers the following main learning objectives:

  • The curriculum has the option of being completed in either 2 or 3 semesters.
  • Students will gain the ability to recognize the broad relevance of computational thinking in everyday life, as well as its applicability within other scientific domains.

Tasks will include medical scribing, triaging patient phone calls, learning medical terminology, taking vital signs, and overall day-to-day office management.

REQUIREMENTS:

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required. Prior clinical exposure is a plus. The ideal candidate will also be an enthusiastic, friendly, self-motivated team player who will hit the ground running.

NARAP applications are open for research associates

The National Alliance of Research Associates Program (NARAP) Affiliate hospital’s are recruiting for Line Research Associates (RAs) for the spring semester and Chief RAs for the spring semester at some sites (particularly St. Vincent’s in Bridgeport, CT and Coney Island Hospital, Brooklyn NY) and for the 2019-2020 academic year at all sites.

Line RAs are pre-health professions students volunteering one 4-hour shift per week in the emergency departments of NARAP Affiliates as data collectors for clinical research.

Chief RAs are college graduates with completed course work for their application to health professional school who volunteer approximately 20 hours per week as middle managers of their Affiliate’s RA Program.  They become fully involved in their Affiliate’s research activities in emergency medicine.

Alumni have expressed how transformative their Fellowship experience was and have gone on to top medical schools, graduate programs, and nonprofit organizations across the US. Our organization is a growing part of the community, with ever-expanding Enhanced Independent Living Housing Programs, Adult Day Programs, and K-12 Youth Programs run by the Fellows year round.
