January 25 Deadline: Penn’s Undergraduate Clinical Scholars Program

The UCSP is a 9-week rigorous summer research enrichment program that starts the week of June 3, 2019 and ends on July 31, 2019. The program is open to students from any accredited university in the United States and is designed specifically for undergraduate students with an interest in clinical/epidemiologic research, with an eventual goal of MD, PhD, or MD-PhD degrees. Preference will be given to non-graduating college students.  At this time, we are not accepting graduate or post-baccalaureate students.

The 9-week program includes weekly didactic lectures and statistics workshops as well as a program-long research experience with an expert clinical investigator. Weekly lectures and workshops will provide an introduction to epidemiologic and biostatistical topics, and will be paired with small group discussions or workshops to reinforce content presented in lectures. Additional lectures will encompass topics on practical aspects of clinical research, which includes human subjects and research ethics, writing abstracts and scientific manuscripts, and admissions to graduate programs.

The Experience

All program students will be paired with an individual mentor to work with directly on a clinical research project. Projects are tailored to each student and clinical investigator to ensure completion by the end of the program. Program commencement includes project presentations to USCP faculty in a focused seminar.

Formal and informal research experiences are supplemented by social events and activities including community service opportunities, attending professional sporting events, and an end-of-summer dinner for all students and program mentors. Thus, participants are able to develop strong and lasting relationships with their fellow students, members of various research programs, and their mentors. The program participants will also receive a competitive stipend for their participation.

On behalf of the Schreyer Honors College Office of Development & Alumni Relations and Office of Career Development we are delighted to invite you, as student interested in pursing a health-related career for a fireside chat with Kristin Lambert ’14 Ag. Kristin is earning her MD and PhD at Penn State Hershey College of Medicine.

Kristin Lambert graduated from the Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences in 2014, earning with a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Immunology & Infectious Disease. She is currently pursuing both a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the Penn State College of Medicine and Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, on an eight-year, full-ride scholarship, after being the inaugural student in the Schreyer Early Assurance MD/PhD Program. Her doctoral research focuses on the genetic regulation of inflammation in asthma and allergic disorders and she plans to work in Pediatric Allergy & Immunology upon graduation with the goal of improving the lives of her patients while also mentoring aspiring scientists and clinicians. While at Penn State, she conducted undergraduate research, danced in THON, and marched in the Blue Band.

February 15 Deadline – University of Alabama Summer Programs

The Summer in Biomedical Sciences (SIBS) Undergraduate Research Program 2019, and the Preparation for Graduate and Medical Education (PARAdiGM) 2019

Both of these programs introduce outstanding undergraduates to the exciting career options of being a scientific investigator while also being a practicing physician. Eligible students may apply to both programs.

  • These two 8-week programs are held concurrently from May 31-July 26, 2019
    • Students will receive stipends and free on-campus housing but will be responsible for their own meals, for travel to and from Birmingham, and other expenses
  • Students in both programs will be introduced to the concept of scientific research, principles of scientific experimentation, the proper methods of data analysis, the interpretation, presentation, and translational applications of research results, and to clinicians who practice at academic medical cente.
  • Aplications must be submitted online and the deadline is February 15, 2019.

Summer in Biomedical Sciences (SIBS) Undergraduate Research Program http://www.uab.edu/sibs

Our goal in offering this fellowship is to give talented undergraduate students the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of intensive, hypothesis-drive laboratory research. This experience should help students make well informed decisions about future career plans.  Previous research experience is not required. We especially welcome applications from students who are interested in research as a potential career, including students interested in PhD and MD-PhD programs. We accept 15 students per summer into this program. We expect applicants to SIBS to have completed at least their sophomore year of undergraduate coursework. We anticipate that successful candidates will typically demonstrate grade point averages of 3.0 (“B”) or higher, especially in science, math, and related areas.

Preparation for Graduate and Medical Education (PARAdiGM) http://www.uab.edu/medicine/paradigm/

The PARAdiGM program focuses on undergraduates from diverse and underrepresented minority backgrounds, and offers the opportunity to participate in the program for two summers. In addition to working in the laboratory of a faculty mentor with an actively funded biomedical research program, PARAdiGM participants will learn about careers in academic medical centers (AMCs) by shadowing clinician-investigators in their clinics, as well as on in-patient rounds. At the end of the first summer in the program, the students will write an abstract and participate in both a local and national poster presentation of their research results. The students will also receive instruction in essay writing, MCAT preparation, and critical career skills. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide undergraduate students with an understanding and appreciation of the biomedical research process so as to encourage them to pursue careers studying patients and their diseases after further postgraduate training in graduate and medical education. Previous research experience is not required in order to apply.  The PARAdiGM program is especially useful for students who do not have local access to biomedical research and/or academic physician-scientist role models.

The KURE (Kidney Undergraduate Research Experience) program gives you the opportunity to learn about advances in kidney research and be mentored as you work on your own research project in a lab within UAB’s kidney community of investigators. This 8-week program allows you the unique opportunity to gain experience in the field of biomedical research.
