The Penn State Hershey College of Medicine Orthopedics Department is looking to hire a 1 year, full time research assistant. Ideally the candidate should be interested in entering the field of medicine, applying to medical school, and hopefully pursuing a career in orthopedics one day.
The job is a full time position for 1 year with benefits included. Research will include clinical projects, helping in our lab with basic science and biomedical engineering experiments, and shadowing staff in the OR’s and clinic. The goal for the students is to have several publishable projects by the end of the year in addition to obtaining valuable mentoring experience.
Salary range is $25,000-$35,000/yr. with full PSU benefits (dependent on experience and education). Applications are open and will begin in late May to early June

There is still time for students to submit an application for the Undergraduate Exhibition and even more time to prepare for the exhibition itself.
Students are required to have a faculty mentor and craft a 75-word abstract in order to complete their application, due by March 24. Then, they have until April 17, the day of the exhibition, to complete the poster, presentation, dance musical number or other performance. The application can be found here.
Jen Buchan, a graduate assistant with the University Fellowships Office, said many students may not realize work they’ve already done could be considered “research.” This semester she’s been leading workshops related to undergraduate research and helping students figure out what they can present at the Undergraduate Exhibition.
“Because the professor asked them to do research, many students assume that the work they do in that class is isolated to the classroom,” Buchan said. “So, I tell them, ‘This is your work. You did the thinking, gathering, compiling and writing. If you apply to present your work at a conference, such as the Undergraduate Exhibition, and you are accepted, then you will have shared your findings with an audience.’”
Because the exhibition is based on research and scholarly activities, UFO and University Libraries — with support from Undergraduate Education — are working to expose students to the undergraduate opportunities available to them. In the coming weeks there will be a no-cost workshop covering research ethics and emotional intelligence on March 21.
On March 14 and 25, students are invited to explore designing and creating effective research posters. Students can also learn how to display their information visually by referring to the Libraries’ poster guide.

New this year, students can apply for the Engagement Experience Poster Exhibition, a session occurring during the Undergraduate Exhibition that highlights student achievement in engaged learning. This new session encourages students to create a poster that reflects on their transformative experiences with others. This could be through internships, study abroad experiences, entrepreneurial ventures, community projects, student organizations, professional experiences, create accomplishments, peer mentoring and volunteering.

Please share widely with potentially eligible undergraduate students (juniors and seniors), incoming graduate students, and first-year graduate students who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. Please also share with faculty mentors in these fields.

Penn State students interested in applying for a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) are encouraged to attend this information session. Students will learn about the Graduate Research Fellowship Program application process and will have the opportunity to hear from a faculty mentor and a student who received the GRFP. They will share their experiences with the program and offer advice on developing strong applications.
Students are encouraged to submit their questions on the form when registering for the session. Students may also ask questions at the event. Registration closes the day before the session.

Join the University Fellowships Office to workshop early drafts of your Personal, Relevant Background and Future Goals and Graduate Research Plan Statements. Amidst collaborative brainstorming and editing, you will get practice turning your life story and career plan into a compelling case for graduate funding and proposing a research project that is both exciting and achievable. We will discuss best practices and common issues for each, as well as strategies for reading and revising your writing when you are on your own.
Applicants must be United States citizens or nationals, or permanent residents of the United States by the application deadlines. (The term “national” designates a native resident of a commonwealth or territory of the United States, such as American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, or the Northern Mariana Islands. It does not refer to a citizen of another country who has applied for U.S. citizenship.)
Fellowships are intended for individuals in the early stages of their graduate study in NSF-supported fields: Chemistry, Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Engineering, Geosciences, Life Sciences, Materials Research, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Psychology, Social Sciences, STEM Education and Learning Research. Center of Excellence in Industrial Biotechnology
Summer Research Scholarships
The Center of Excellence in Industrial Biotechnology has established a new Summer Research Scholarship to support undergraduates doing research in the broad area of industrial biotechnology, including biopharmaceutical manufacturing, food biotechnology, and production of bio-based chemicals. Students will be expected to work closely with a faculty member at Penn State on a research project that advances our knowledge in the field of industrial biotechnology. This includes projects conducted in the CSL Behring Fermentation Facility.
Eligibility
Penn State undergraduate students from all campuses in any field of study may apply for the Industrial Biotechnology Research Scholarship. Recipients must be enrolled full-time at Penn State for at least one semester immediately following the Summer Scholarship. In addition, students must have a Penn State faculty supervisor who is available during the summer to oversee the proposed research and provide mentorship to the student.
Scholarship Funds
Research Scholarships will be in the amount of $5,000, and are intended to cover any personal costs (e.g., housing and food) over the course of the summer. Funds will be distributed directly to student bursar accounts at Penn State and could have an affect on student aid (or be applied to cover any outstanding charges). Funds are intended to enable students to immerse themselves in their research projects full time during approximately 10 weeks over the summer. Start and end dates are flexible and should be discussed with the research supervisor. In addition, up to $1,500 can be provided to the faculty supervisor to support the research project, e.g., the purchase of supplies or access to various core research facilities.

As a university, Penn State has a vigorous and extensive research enterprise. Faculty are awarded grants by government and private agencies to conduct research in the many academic disciplines within the university structure. Undergraduates who qualify are invited to participate in the on-going research programs of BMB faculty. Typically, between 70 and 80 students are engaged in undergraduate research (496) during the Fall and Spring semesters. Most of these students are juniors and seniors. Participation in undergraduate research requires that an application be submitted which is reviewed by faculty members selected by the student.

Submissions are still being accepted. The symposium is open to all racial/ethnic backgrounds and undergraduate and graduate students.
The Eberly College of Science Summer Undergraduate Research Program is a 10-week summer training program designed to give motivated Penn State undergraduates in the college the opportunity to engage in full-time (40 hrs/wk) research and related professional development activities. Our goal is to offer students experiences that will help them determine if they want to pursue a career in research while they develop skills for success at Penn State and beyond. The program requires participation in weekly research and professional development seminars, periodic social events, and a final poster. Students selected to participate in this training program will be paid ~$4,000. Faculty research mentors may receive up to $500 in discretionary funds.
Though all ECoS undergraduates are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to students:
1) in their first and second year students or students who have changed campuses,
2) with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher,
3) without significant research experience, e.g., a full-time summer research experience or 2 semesters of part-time research,
4) not in the Schreyer Honors College,
5) willing to commit to research with the same mentor after the summer program, and
6) proposing to conduct research with Eberly College of Science faculty mentors.
Because summer undergraduate research fellows must commit at least 40 hrs/wk to the training program, fellows are not permitted to engage in any activities that may interfere with program activities.
Students are strongly encouraged to build relationships with faculty references as well as potential faculty mentors before drafting an application to the program.

The Pittsburgh Undergraduate Research Diversity Program (PURDIP) is open to minority (African American, Hispanic/Latino American, or Native American) undergraduate students interested in biomedical research. The 10-week summer program is held on the University of Pittsburgh’s Oakland campus. Students will work with a designated faculty member for 8-10 weeks. Training will incorporate didactic lectures, seminars, workshops, group homework, hands-on research and presentations by the trainees.
