East Asian Tea Our Expo is focusing on the wonderful qualities and rich history of East Asian teas and tea ceremonies. Tea Ceremonies Penn state tea clubs Chanoyu (Japanese Tea Ceremony), Gongfu Cha (Chinese Tea Ceremony), and Darye (Korean Tea Ceremony) all work together as the Penn State Tea Ceremony Clubs. Our Clubs The Japanese Tea Ceremony (茶の湯) has a long history that has grown from it‘s origins into something entirely new. Four principles guide the practice of chanoyu: harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. Harmony is embodied through the friendship between the guests and host. Respect shows in the exchanges between the guests and host; every interaction is designed to honor each participant. Purity is echoed in the steps taken to clean the wares and maintain the space the host is using. Tranquility comes from the surroundings and the peace cultivated in every step of the ceremony. Gongfu Cha (功夫茶) is a traditional Chinese tea preparation method that emphasizes precision, ritual, and aesthetics of brewing tea. The practice involves using specific teaware, high-quality loose-leaf tea, and a series of precise steps, including quick infusions and multiple steepings of tea leaves. Gongfu Cha is both a ceremonial and social experience that allows tea connoisseurs to appreciate the art of preparation and the diverse flavors derived from different types of tea leaves. Darye (다례) is the name for the traditional Korean tea ceremony. Darye has a long and interesting history that shows how interconnected East Asia is and how culture flows. Darye has both powder tea and whole leaf tea ceremonies. Korean tea has a strong focus on harmony and uses tea to unit both the brewer and the guest. Korean tea culture also emphasizes etiquette and respect of both the tea and guest. In Darye tea is a uniting force to get to know one another. Find us at 034 Ritenour, State College.
