Why did you decide to enter a technical career field?
In school, I usually did well in my math classes. So when the decision came time to pick a major at the University of Florida, I knew I wanted to go with Engineering. I chose Civil Engineering because it was the most diverse field of engineering. After taking some of my undergrad classes, I found that Transportation caught my interest the most.

What has been your career journey so far?
During my final year at the University of Florida, I had an internship with Alachua County Public Works in their Transportation Division. Right after college, I started work at Wantman Group Inc., an engineering consultant company, as an Engineer and worked mostly on roadway projects for about two years. Soon after, I joined CSX Transportation and entered their Management Trainee Program. Once placed in Design & Construction, I started as a Project Manager working on new or rehab rail projects. After two years, I transitioned into my current role as a Construction Engineer.

What do you like most about your job?
What I like most about my job, is working with a diverse group of departments to help in the success of a project. Instead of focusing on just the track construction of a rail project, I am also very involved with other aspects that make up the whole, such as signals, utilities, property, outside parties, etc. I meet lots of people in different departments and get to learn about the other parts that help complete the project.

What would be your advice to young women entering the industry?
Do not be intimidated and strive to be different. When I chose my major in college, I quickly learned that women in engineering were the minority. I did not let that steer me away from my goals and aspirations. If anything, it motivated me even more to become an engineer, knowing that I could make a difference.

What are your interests/hobbies outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy traveling and exploring new places. I also like to attend different sporting events and most recently have been trying to perfect my golf game. I have always been fond of the arts and will catch a Broadway show or attend a concert every now and then. However, I am usually caught binge-watching the latest Netflix show.

In your opinion, what is the recipe for success – for a team, career, or otherwise?
The recipe for success includes leadership, communication, and drive. Be a leader in everything you do, always keep an open line of communication, and continue to have that drive and passion and you will be successful.
