After hearing all of the hype surrounding the summer ArtsFest here at Penn State, it was finally time to experience it for myself. Taking it all in, I strolled down the walkways lining Old Main into downtown. It was extremely intriguing to see the wide variety of art that was on display for the weekend. The ArtsFest was a hotbed for diversity, which included an impressive array of headwear. The streets were flooded with different kinds of individuals wearing various types of hats. Penn State is a special and diverse community and it was evident in the headgear certain people had on display.

One of the first and unique hats I had witnessed during ArtsFest at Penn State was worn by a courageous and striking individual. With a strong patriotic feel, a bald eagle in front of our Nation’s flag was located on the front. The piece that really made this hat so diverse and exclusive was the war veteran button attached to the side. This man, which was obvious through his choice in hat, was actually a service member for our country. The hat this man wore exemplified the diversity shown here at Penn State.

Walking down the blocked-off streets on campus, another diverse hat was on display. An older woman was donning a lightly colored floppy hat. In fact, after a discussion with this individual, it was discovered that her hat was from Australia! Known as a “Wallaboo”, this sun-protection hat had  built-in sunscreen located in the inside-top section of the hat. It was very interesting to discover this. At first site, no one could ever imagine the specifics behind such a simply designed floppy hat. The owner of this hat was extremely kind in conversation and displayed diversity on campus thanks to her hat choice.

An elderly, quiet and congenial man was representing a subtle side to the diverse number of hats seen at ArtsFest. This straw-like hat represented a relaxed take on life. The hat included a palm tree trimmed lining around the base of the hat. While ArtsFest is a bustling scene, this diverse that contradicted the day with a relaxed feel. This is definitely the type of hat I can see myself wearing when I am his age! The hat worn by this man was extremely different and diverse in nature.

Although they did not want to be pictured, the fourth and final hat I discovered was very different from others I had previously seen. An asian family surrounded around their young child were taking in the festivities of the ArtsFest that day. However, this family was kind enough to let us take a picture of the hat that the baby was actually wearing. It was extremely small compared to the other hats we had examined that day and it was white in color. This hat most definitely kept the baby cool in the hot sun. With a Navy blue stripe around the hat, a fake flower was located front and center. This hat, worn by a young child, most definitely was a diverse aspect of ArtsFEst at Penn State.

Overall, my experience at ArtsFest was one I will never forget. The amount of diversity that was on display was incredible, as seen through the hats that individuals were wearing. ArtsFest was an absolute showcase for diversity in the Penn State community. Hats were one of many ways in which people conveyed the way in which they were different. I am very glad I was able to take part in this assignment due to the fact that it made me more aware of the uniqueness of the community.
