Community of Practice

We are an informal group of educators who share a passion to learn collectively about improving engaged scholarship experiences for students, instructors, and supporting organizations. We started our Community of Practice for Teaching Engaged Scholarship in November 2019. to discuss challenges we encountered in our daily practices of teaching and facilitating engaged scholarship, such as:

  • Engaged scholarship doesn’t come naturally for most students, and educators are responsible for preparing them well.
  • The literature on engaged scholarship pedagogies is fragmented.
  • There is often no time in one semester with busy schedules for deep learning about engaged scholarship.
  • Educators are often left to their own devices with few expectations and incentives.

We have presented our work at conferences and have developed with Penn State University Libraries the library guide Engaged Scholarship: Starting an Experience for your Class. This guide provides educators and students with a curated list of resources to promote and support engaged scholarship experiences of students at Penn State campuses.
