Lead and Lipstick

Being a girl I’ve always wondered what is really in makeup products. I put on makeup virtually everyday and never even thought about what was inside of it. I’ve always just assumed that since the brands seemed reliable there were no problems. But in doing research I learned this is not necessarily true. The products I’ve been putting on my face, eyes and lips may be harmful for me.

Have you ever wondered how lipstick can stain your lips virtually any and every color you could possibly want? Well this is due to the chemicals that are in the makeup. Most of those chemicals are harmless and do no damaging effect to your health. But what if I told you that directly following an alert issued by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, the FDA lead two investigations in which every lipstick they tested came back positive for containing lead. In the first investigation they found lead levels of up to 3.06 (parts per a million) and in the second investigation they found levels up to 7.19 ppm.

What’s even more alarming was the fact that they were testing well-known brands for lead. These cosmetic companies included M.A.C, Dior, L’Oreal, Avon and Cover girl. Besides Dior and M.A.C these brands are readily available at every drug and grocery store in the country. Those brands are the cost friendly alternative to department store makeup. This meaning that virtually every woman owns them.

Lead in any amount is not safe for your body and can cause permanent damage if not tended to. Some of the permanent health damages are poor muscle coordination, nerve damage, increased blood pressure, hearing and vision impairment, reproductive problems and retarded fetal development. All of these can occur in even the lowest amount of exposure

In conclusion don’t assume that just because a brand is well known that all there products are safe. Even high- end department store makeup contains lead. So do your research before buying cosmetics especially ones that sit on your lips for hours at a time.

I’ve heard about that before and I what I do is try to not use that much makeup. Usually on the week, when I have class I don’t wear any type of make up so that if I want to wear makeup over the weekend it would not be harmful. Sometimes I don’t even wear makeup when I go out. I tried not to use that much lipstick because I know it could be very harmful. I found this website that it gives a list of 11 lead free lipsticks. Although I’m not sure if its true it doesn’t hurt to try them. http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/beauty/makeup/lead-free-lipsticks-470402#slide-1
