Will Humans Ever be able to Breathe Underwater?

Never in a million years would you think that there would be a possibility that humans could breathe underwater. Scientists all over the world have been looking into the idea and experimenting to see if it is possible for us to be able to breathe underwater. Alon Bodner, an Israeli businessman, has been working on a model of artificial gills. Bodner and his team have accomplished a sufficient amount, enough to gather data and come up with a plan on how these artificial gills would work.

Their goal was essentially to mimic how actual gills work, which would be to create a structure that makes dissolved oxygen from the ocean water. Artificial gills could possibly work on several different ways. One way would be using “liquid breathing”, which would work by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide, which is the way that Bodner approached it. He would do this by applying low pressure to “seperate the air from the ocean” as editor Hunter Skipworth described. These “gills” would help divers, by letting them spend more time underwater, unlike oxygen tanks which limits the amount of oxygen they have for a certain amount of time.

These “human gills” are currently being tested, and have been contemplated to be used for military purposes. I believe that bringing in artificial gills into our society would be a huge advantage, especially for military purposes.

I agree with all of your comments. I think that these gills would greatly benefit our society, especially the military. I was truly intrigued when I found information about possibly having technology to allow humans to breathe underwater without using an oxygen tank.

As a little girl, I always went to the beach. Thinking that I could conquer these huge waves, I fearlessly swam in the ocean. However, when a huge wave came through, I found myself trapped underwater. I thought that it be cool if I was able to breath underwater! I found this article extremely interesting. These “human gills” would be very beneficial, and I can see them becoming a huge advancement for the future.

I really liked this topic! Salted water oceans make up 71% of the Earth`s surface. Can you imagine be able to discover and visit all the mysteries that the ocean have? But I think the real question here is what would the humans do if they found something that they never thought they would find? This kind of technology would help us learn more about our planet and all the things that is offering us.

This is really interesting! I didn’t even know scientists were working on things like this, but I guess they’re always working on stuff we don’t know about. Being able to breathe underwater would be a huge advantage to our military – there’s so many more possibilities. Not only that, it’s a giant step in technology. I’d love to see the artificial gills in use.

This is actually a really cool topic! I feel as though in today’s society technology is always changing and with the technology we have today plus the many more to come, this invention can definitely be accomplished! I think it would be extremely beneficial for an assortment of purposes. I agree with allowing this “gill” like feature to be used for military purposes which would be extremely beneficial. i also think that it could be useful for even divers to be able to capture new and unseen footage of underwater life in an easier manner. Although there may be some set backs when testing this new invention, I feel that with all the desire for a way to breathe underwater, this invention can fully be accomplished for great purposes!

I think humans will be able to breathe under water one day with the ever changing technology in our society. I’ve read theories that during our evolution we once were able to breathe under water due to a “Gill like” organ we once had but we lost during our evolution. I read a study about people in Asia who rely heavily on the fish that they capture for survival trained themselves to hold there breath for five plus minutes at a time under water and adapted their eyes to dilate so they can see under water as if they were wearing goggles.

This is actually really interesting because of the fact that we’d be able to throw in a little mouth piece and not have to worry about oxygen tanks. I’ve been scuba diving before and its nerve racking watching your oxygen levels go down. Having a piece that essentially mimicked gills would allow us spend a whole day down there if we really wanted to. So this article definitely excites me because this is definitely a product I’d purchase once they become available for others than the army.

This is a very intriguing topic. Creating these gills is not going to be easy, but, if this were to be accomplished, this would be such a technological success. This would greatly benefit our modern day military as we would be able to do more underwater and make us more a more advanced military.
