Dig Out of Poverty: Education (Final Film Project)

by Wanying Xie

During the whole semester, I’ve learned a lot about Africa, about its past and about its presence. When it comes to the future, I believe that the education is the key point in order to create a brighter future in Africa. In my assigned country, Ivory Coast, literacy is extremely low, probably the lowest in Africa. As the country recovers from the war and moves on, education becomes one of the most important things in Ivory Coast. The future of the country depends on the new generation. If we can make sure that every or almost every child is properly educated, we can build a bright future.

In this video, I simply explained how poverty is related to education and how education can help people dig out of Poverty. When I was doing my research, I found out that not only the international forces were helping, but also those Ivorian who received higher education and wanted to make a difference for their homeland.

Christine Kadjo, an Ivorian who was highly educated, sets up Education Center for locals. She teaches women basic life skills so that they could make money of it. She sets up scholarship for teenage girls who want to pursue higher education. All she does is to help her home country get rid of poverty.

1040i is an international organization dedicated to bring more education resources to Ivory Coast. Volunteers build school in Ivory Coast and help the kids with their school works. They bring essential facilities as well as hopes to Ivorian kids.

The Soul of Ivory Coast: Soccer

Soccer - International Friendly - Ivory Coast v South Korea - Loftus Road

When people talk about the country Ivory Coast, the first thing come across their mind is soccer. As the largest sport worldwide, soccer does have vitally important influences on Ivory Coast. In Ivory Coast, you can see children playing soccer on the street, adults talking about soccer in the work place and television station playing soccer games all the day. The sport becomes more than a sport itself to Ivory Coast people during the past decades.

The national team of Ivory Coast made its name in 1992 by winning the African Cup of Nations. It was not the first time for Ivory Coast to take place in the African Cup but it was the best time for Ivorian. In Senegal, Ivorian welcomed their first championship. Winning Algeria with the score 3-0 and getting a draw with Congo with 0-0, Ivory Coast successfully advanced to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Ivory Coast kept its momentum and won  Cameroon in a penalty kick. The final was not easy for Ivorian, they had a draw with Ghana in the regular game time. Penalty kick followed and Ivorian won it with the score 11-10. This score is still the biggest score in soccer games till nowadays.

African championship made Ivory Coast famous out of African continent. People all over the world started to know the country and its fantastic soccer team. In the following years, Ivory Coast national team has become a strong force in Africa. They got a great record since 1992. They got the third place in 1994, fourth place in 2008 and the Runners-up in 2012. Now, when people talk about African soccer, they can avoid Ivory Coast since it is such a strong team.

The championship did not only bring fame and reputation to Ivory Coast. The championship started to change the country and young kids. Boys all over the country started to play soccer as their extracurricular activity. This change brought Ivory Coast a squad of young and talented soccer players in recent years. From Didier Drogba to Yaya Toure, these young players made Ivory Coast a stronger team and finally brought Ivory Coast to international stage. The 2006 World Cup in Germany was the first time for Ivory Coast to attend huge international games. The unstable domestic political situation didn’t influence the progress of the national team. In 2005, Drogba led the whole team beat Cameroon, another strong team in Africa. It was this victory that gave Ivory Coast the opportunity to attend the World Cup next year. Although they didn’t make it to the quarterfinals, they gave the whole world a strike and made more and more people start to know about their country. After the first World Cup, Ivorian didn’t slow down their progress. They also made it to the final stage of World Cup in 2010 and 2014.

The fast development of soccer not only made the national team famous all over the world, but also brought the country changes and opportunities. Those famous Ivorian soccer players, especially Drogba, actually became the role model of Ivorian kids. Their posters were all over the country. Young boys played soccer after school dreaming of becoming a national hero one day. Soccer brought people in Ivory Coast a little peace in their life. When playing soccer or watching their kids playing soccer, they temporarily get rid of their anxiety due to the unstable political situation. What’s more, during the sever civil war, soccer did bring real peace to the whole country. As the most famous player in the country, Drogba called for peace several times in public. But in 2008, Drogba brought his words into action. Drogba brought the separated country sit together and fight together in a soccer game against Madagascar. In this day, people put their anger and weapon down and fight as one.

Didier Drogba: More than a soccer player

When people talk about revolutionary figures, they always talk about politicians and social activists. It’s true that politicians and social activists always bring a revolution. They establish new government, fight for democracy and freedom and they call for attentions on human rights. However, there are a huge number of people, who have different careers, are significant to the development of a country. They contribute and effect their countries in their own ways. In Ivory Coast, this “Mr. Significant” is Didier Drogba.

Born in March, 11th in 1978, Drogba is a world-famous soccer player from Ivory Coast. When Drogba turned 5, he moved to France because of the civil war in Ivory Coast. In France, he started to learn how to play soccer with his uncle, who played for the national team of Ivory Coast in the past. At the beginning, Drogba missed his hometown and parents terribly so that he came back to Abidjan after his third year in France.

However, bad situation in Ivory Coast made his parent lose their jobs. Drogba then had to return to France to live with his uncle. Several years later, his parents moved to France and lived in suburbs of Paris. He then returned to his parents and started to play team soccer. He was passionate and talent. When Drogba turned 19, he started his career in a French club: Le Mans.

Drogba went through a hard time in training and competing since his experience of moving a lot makes him not as good as his French teammates. His career was twisted at the beginning. However, five years later, he joined Guingamp, a club played in Ligue 1, which is the Championnat de France de football Ligue 1. His career became prosperous since then. Drogba’s outstanding performance in Guingamp made him a famous player in France. He then played for several famous French club. Drogba’s turning point in his career life appeared in 2004. He transfered to the world-famous soccer club: Chelsea in England. His talent and incredible performance gradually made him world famous player.

When Drogba became famous, the whole world started to notice this incredible soccer player and his hometown: Ivory Coast. Drogba became the captain of Ivory Coast national team and he led his team successfully in several important games. They made Ivory Coast a famous soccer country in Africa. When people talk about fantastic soccer teams, they started to talk about Ivory Coast. For Drogba himself, he has been named “African Footballer of the year” twice and he was the first winner of that title in Ivory Coast.

Drogba’s success in soccer started to effect beyond soccer world. Almost every little kid in Ivory Coast likes Drogba and every kid wants to become a man like Drogba. People started to play soccer all over the country. They gradually forgot the pain of wars in their country because of the happiness soccer brought them. There were much more posters of Drogba in the country than the posters of their president. Drogba was like a shinning star in Ivory Coast. He arose exactly the time when Ivory Coast needed a hero. Wars and conflicts have made Ivory Coast exhausted. The exist of Drogba was kind of a new hope to the country. People gathered to play soccer and cheered for their national team. They enjoyed the happiness of sports and they were proud of being a citizens of Ivory Coast. In 2006, the civil war in Ivory Coast was sever. At that time, Drogba returned to his homeland. His speeches and mediations finally brought peace to this country. For the first time, he proved that he was not just a soccer player. Drogba’s power was magic for Ivory Coast. His influence on Ivory Coast was so deep that he was absolutely a revolutionary figure in Ivory Coast.

Colony in Africa and in America

Europeans started their colonization in late 16th century due to the fast development in European countries, especially in England and France. Both America and Africa was colonies of Europe in the past. However, the colonial experience of Africa was not quite similar to that of America even though they share some similarities.

The colonization of America started in late 16th century when several major European countries launched their colonization in north America. After many years of settlement, the colonization ended since American people fought for their independence. In 18th century, the United States of America established. The establishment of United States gradually ended the colonization of Europeans. Another place far away from America, Africa, also suffered from the European colonization. The colonization of Africa started roughly in the late 18th century and early 19th century because of European growing fascination with Africa. In the name of exploration and religious mission, the Europeans started their colonization in Africa.

There are several similarities in these two colonization. The settlers in both America and Africa were from Europe and most of them were from England and France. Besides this basic fact, the biggest similarity of these two colonization is that the colonization effected that region in a lot of ways and some of the effects have remained until nowadays. The colonization shaped the society in a huge way. The way people lived, the way government ruled and the way a country developed. Some of those effects were bad but some effects actually promoted the development in general. For example, colonization brought both America and Africa into world economy and promoted the trade. But meanwhile, the Europeans used all local workers but took nearly all the profits of the trades.

However, there are also differences between the colonization of Africa and that of America.   One of the differences is the slavery system. In America, the very first slave was brought to Virginia in the 17th century from Africa. After that, numerous slaves were brought to America for many years. The slaves in America were the major work forces at that time. They worked mostly at plantations in the South and did heavy jobs. Those slaves helped to develop the plantation economy in the South and gradually made the plantation become the biggest industry in the South. On the contrary, the slavery situation was different in Africa. Numerous African free people were transformed to slaves and then were brought to Europe, America and other places. The slave trade was prosperous at that time. Men, women and children were all involved in the big slave trade.

The trade of slaves from Africa to America was called Atlantic slave trade. Slaves once became the only “crop” to export from Africa. The Atlantic slave trade gradually became a “triangle trade”. First, Europeans traded cheap industrial products and munitions to some Kings or leaders in African countries for slaves or sometime they just “hunt” for slaves illegally. Then they sold slaves to the owners of plantations in North America in order to get minerals and crops. Last, they sold American minerals and crops in Europe to get profits. Almost every step in the triangle trade brought merchants numerous profits. As a result, the trade developed and expanded. For instance, in 1709, there was only one ship used for slave trade in Liverpool. Then in 1730, the number of ship became 15. Growing so quickly , in 1792, there were 132 ships used for slave trade just in Liverpool.

The slave trade brought African people pains and sufferings. African people never stopped fighting for themselves even though European countries promote so-called “peace trade”. Nobody wanted to become slave so that almost every slave in Africa tried to fight. There were several groups of people in Congo and Angola formed armed group to attack those tribes or villages which were involved in slave trade in order to free the slaves. Fortunately, in late 18th century and early 19th century, European countries started to abolish the slavery system. Britain abolished the system in 1807, then United States in1808, France in 1818 and Brazil in 1825. Although the abolishment was published, the slave trade hadn’t stopped until the Berlin Conference in 1885 and the Brussels Conference in 1890. The 4-century-long slave trade gave Africa people irreversible and huge lost.

Although the colonial histories are different in Africa and in America, there’s one truth always existing that colony brings sufferings and pains to people. We are so lucky that we live in a humane society right now and we hope that the colonization will never happen again.

Precolonial history of Ivory Coast

There is almost nothing known about the very ancient Ivory Coast. There’s no clue of the original inhabitants in Ivory Coast. Historians believe that the original inhabitants were either displaced or absorbed by the ancestors of the present inhabitants. As far as the historical record shows, the trade of basic supplements expanded from the Saharan area. As a result, several places in the West Africa became prosperous. The boom in trade made the route of trade southern. More and more people moved south, which is now the territory of the Ivory Coast.

Empires and rulers near this area kept emerging and declining. Noticeably, in the 11th century, Islam was brought to western Africa by the traders from North Africa. Later, the Islam was rapidly spread  and was accepted and embraced by many empires in the West Africa. By the time rulers of Sudanic empires started to embrace the Islam, Islam spread southern to the north part of contemporary Ivory Coast. In 14th century, the northern Ivory Coast was ruled by the Mali Empire. But later on, the reign was ended by internal discord and by the revolt of vassal states. Another empire Songhai emerged and the empire flourished during 14the century and 16the century. However, the empire collapsed also because of internal discord. Then, fractional warfares in this region made people move south to the rain forest. The dense forest created barriers between the south part and the north part of the country so that people who moved to the south part could live away from the political and military conflicts. After that, people settled down in the south and started village life. They earned their livings mainly by agriculture and hunting.

As time went on, more and more empires and states emerged in Ivory Coast. The Muslim Kong Empire was established by the Juula in the early eighteenth century in the north part of the country. Kong became the center of agriculture and crafts during that time. However, ethnic diversity and religious discord gradually made the kingdom collapse. Meanwhile, in the south, the Abron kingdom of Jaman, which was established early in the 17th century, existed. This kingdom finally expended its hegemony over the Juula in Bondoukou. Bondoukou  then became a major center of commerce and Islam. The kingdom’s Quranic scholars attracted students from all parts of West Africa. In the mid-eighteenth century in east-central Ivory Coast, other Akan groups fleeing the Asante established a Baoulé kingdom at Sakasso and two Agni kingdoms, Indénié and Sanwi. The Baoulé, like the Asante, elaborated a highly centralized political and administrative structure under three successive rulers, but it finally split into smaller chiefdoms.

There isn’t many information about  the ancient history of Ivory Coast. But there are still some sort of websites which focus on African history, where I can find some clues. Also, learning the history of nearby countries is a good way to learn more about the history of Ivory Coast, since there has been interactions between these countries and these countries shared the same cultural and historical in a way. The reason why there’s little known about ancient Ivory Coast is that the history of this country is merged with the history of other significant empires in the African history. What’s more, Ivory Coast was not one of the origin of African civilization. The country was built because of the migration of people from north to south in the past.

The luster pearl–Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast, as its name suggested, is located in the west coast of Africa. Ivory Coast used to be the most prosperous country in the Africa during the Cold War. People saw Ivory Coast as a luster pearl in West Africa in the past time. Although today’s Ivory Coast is no longer the most prosperous country in the whole Africa, Ivory Coast is still a good place to visit for the old cities, historical buildings and incredible natural beauty.

There are two major cities in Ivory Coast: Abidjan and Yamoussoukro. Abidjan was the capital city in the past and Yamoussoukro is the capital city right now. However, Abidjan is actually the center of economics and culture till now. The whole city Abidjan was built on several small islands and peninsulas near the Ebrie lake. Those islands are connected by bridges, which make Abidjan a beautiful coast city.  Since Ivory Coast was one of the colony countries of France and Abidjan was the main city in the past, Abidjan has a French style. The beautiful streets, fantastic parks and historical universities made Abidjan the “little Paris” in the West Africa. Besides, Abidjan is located on the west coast of African continent, where near the Atlantic Ocean. As a result, the beaches in Abidjan is absolutely fantastic. One of the most famous beach in Abidjan is Assinie Beach. There are clear sky, cool sea water and soft white sands. It’s a perfect place for vacation. It’s not as crowded as Miami Beach and it’s not as expensive as Cancun. Besides beach, the location of Abidjan brings prosperous port economy. Abidjan Port was the biggest port in West Africa and the second biggest port in the whole Africa. If you walk along the port, you can not only enjoy the warm breeze, but also see how prosperous the economy of Ivory Coast was and how they created the “20-year miracle” during the Cold War.

Another wonderful city in Ivory Coast is the capital city Yamoussoukro. The government of Ivory Coast changed the capital city into Yamoussoukro in 1983. Yamoussoukro started to become famous and dynamic since 1983. One of the most important crop in Yamoussoukro is cacao. There was a famous saying that one half of the cacaos we used nowadays is from Ivory Coast. The plantation of cacao is the core of Ivory Coast economy. Besides the development of economy, the culture and public infrastructure developed a lot since 80s. One of the most famous building in Yamoussoukro is Basilique de Notre Dame de la Paix de Yamoussoukro–the peace Notre Dame church of Yamoussoukro. This church is largest Catholic church all over the world. It was built during 1985 and 1989. It cost the government of Ivory Coast 3 billion dollars to build this church. After 1989, the church became the most famous and hottest attraction in Yamoussoukro.

The climate of Ivory Coast is tropical rainy climate, so there monsoon in Ivory Coast. In order to have a wonderful vacation in Ivory Coast, the best time to visit Ivory Coast is late spring. You can have the best travel experience in Ivory Coast if you visit in April or May.

To draw a brief conclusion, Ivory Coast is definitely a fantastic place for travel. Welcome to Ivory Coast.

Stereotype on African countries

Article Title: Another African country is expected to pass an anti-gay law

Source:http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2014/03/25/another-african-country-is-expected-to-pass-an-anti-gay-law/

Article date: March 25 2014

This article discussed the issue that another African country-Ethiopia was going to pass a bill that “would take away the president’s ability to pardon people convicted under laws banning homosexual acts’. Before this anti-homosexuality law published by Ethiopia, there were two other African Country which has passed anti-gay law. These two countries are Uganda and Nigeria. In Africa, there are several countries that ban homosexual acts and for this time, some of this countries are going to put the prohibition on gays in their law.

Gay marriage is one of the hottest words recently. Since several states in the United States found that the ban on gay marriage is a violation to the U.S. Constitution, these state started to push the legislation of gay marriage, which was also supported by federal government. Meanwhile, the whole world started to focus on this issue. People started to pay attention to the rights of LGBT group. These attentions were also paid to the gay right and gay marriage in African countries.

This article I found has a key word: condemnation. After the passage of strict anti-gay law in these African countries, governments of these countries received a huge amount of condemnation from all over the world. Due to the civilization and development of human society, people started to care more about human rights which include the equality of homosexual and heterosexual. But in Africa or we can say in the information of Africa we learned from our media, things seemed to be the same as in the old time. Mainstream of African society still didn’t accept homosexual. The social norm was more likely to be anti-homosexual. As I read all those articles about gay issue , I found that almost every article had the same tone-biased. Journalists are likely to describe Africa as a uncivilized, rude place when they write about human right issue in Africa. The article I chose is from the Washington Post, one of the mainly paper media in the United States. I think the source impacts the choice of words and tone. As a major media in the States, Washington Post represents the mainstream ideology in this country. So when it’s going to write something which is not correspond to the main ideology of this country, the tone is biased.

In my own opinion, homosexual right is one of the basic human rights. People should have the right to choose their partner. However, different places in the world have different societies. As a result, the ideology of each country or region is absolutely different. African countries had their own development, so there are a lot of social customs that cannot be changed in a short time. But with the civilization of their own society and the interaction with developed countries, Africa is definitely going to be more versatile and is able to tolerate homosexual. What we should do is not condemning but giving Africa more time to develop.
