493W Instructor – The Principles and Ethics of Coaching:  Examines the challenges of today’s coaching profession through societal norms and expectations from the past and present. The course begins with a study of the coaching profession covering past and current coaches who have experienced success and failure in the profession.  Students learn how the profession has developed as a result of changing values, demands, emphasis and expectations in the athletic world.  Students will learn how to work with Title IX, parents, high school and collegiate regulations, season structures and the various roles and responsibilities of today’s coach.  The course is a senior-level course providing students in Kinesiology with an in depth study of the profession that has historically been associated with careers in Kinesiology.  The goal of the course is for each student to actively develop their own leadership and ethics philosophy to be used in their future careers

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The chief purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the art and science of coaching.  Through lecture, discussion, and laboratory experiences, this course will give students a firm foundation in the practical application of sport sciences (sport psychology, sport pedagogy, sport physiology), sport management and sport leadership.

Throughout the semester, you will work on developing your own coaching philosophy.  By the end of this semester, this philosophy will be a part of a larger coaching portfolio.  This course is designed to accommodate various styles and levels in which students may be interested in coaching.  Class format will contain a mixture of lecture, guest speakers, student presentations, ONLINE and Field Study tasks, discussion and small group work.
