What do the Function Keys do?

fn keysHave you ever wondered what those “F-keys” at the top of your keyboard do? If so, here are some (and no where near all) of the functions of these keys:

F1 often opens a help menu for the program that you are using at that moment.

F2 allows you to rename a selected file in Windows Explorer/Documents window.

F3 opens a search window in your program, if applicable.

F4 most commonly is used with the Alt or Control keys. ALT-F4 closes your current active window and CTRL-F4 closes an open window inside an active window.

F5 refreshes an Internet browser window. This also launches the slideshow in PowerPoint.

F6 moves your cursor to the address bar in an Internet browser.

F7 open the Spelling and Grammar check in MS Word. If you use Shift-F7 instead, you open the thesaurus.

F10 give you the right-click window if you are in Microsoft Office products. Shift-F10 acts like a right-click on the Windows desktop.

F11 usually enters full screen mode in an Internet browser. Hitting F11 again will bring your windows back to “normal”.

F12 along with the shift key (Shift-F12) will give you a “Save As…” prompt in Microsoft Word.
