Open Access Day special programming event 

Join us the morning of Monday, Oct. 12, for a University Libraries special programming event focusing on Open Access, to be held in Foster Auditorium and online via MediaSite Live.
 
The morning’s on-site agenda will begin with coffee and conversation in Mann Assembly Room, E103 Paterno Library. 
 
The program will commence at 9 a.m.:
 
9:00 a.m.   Welcome & Introductions with Associate Dean Joe Salem 
 
9:05 a.m.   “OA 101” with Associate Dean Anne Langley 
This professional development information session will define key concepts and terms, describing the serials crisis, a brief history of the rise of the Open Access movement, and a description of some of the ways that universities and particularly university libraries are responding. 
 
9:25 a.m.  Non-STEM, long format OA with Eric Novotny
Publishing in the humanities and social sciences is rapidly evolving with growing momentum toward Open Access. We will explore the latest developments, survey scholars’ perceptions of Open Access, and discuss how the University Libraries can play a positive role in the emerging open monograph movement.
 
9:45 a.m.  How to be an OA Ambassador
Esther Dell, Linda Friend, and Patricia Hswe share insight and tips on how University Libraries faculty and staff can learn about, practice, and support Open Access.
 
10:10 a.m.  Implementing our Policies with Tom Reinsfelder
A review of Penn State’s recently adopted Open Access policy (Library Faculty Organization) and Open Access resolution (PSU Faculty Senate). What does it all mean and where do we go from here?
 
10:30 a.m. Technical Update/Year in Review with Nan Butkovich
Hear updates on government Open Access guidelines from agencies such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
 
10:50 a.m.  Wrap-up, Next Steps with Associate Dean Joe Salem 
Stay to hear plans already underway for Open Educational Resources (OER) programming as part of Open Education Week in March 2016.
 
11:00 a.m.  Official programming ends 
Faculty and staff watching via MediaSite Live are encouraged to hold a post-event debrief/conversation at their locations.
 
11:30 a.m.  University Park audience members will reconvene in 126A Paterno Library (please note: location changed from Mann Assembly Room) for a debrief conversation over brownbag lunch led by Associate Dean Anne Langley.
