Now that college has started and classes have been in session for a few weeks, grades seem more important than ever. Students need exceptional grades to graduate with a degree in certain majors, and it can be hard while trying to adjust and balance a college life. One fact that I have heard many times is that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However, most days when I have early classes I skip breakfast. Yet, I have not noticed any difference on how I preform in classes whether I eat breakfast to start out my day or not. In this article written by Kathleen M. Zelman, it states, “When kids skip breakfast, they don’t get what they need to be at their best.” By this she means that just like a car needs fuel to operate, your brain needs food. She later stated, “You’ll be more efficient in just about everything you do.” This means more focused in the classroom more energized for physical activities- anything someone does early in their day.
Additionally, Kathleen’s article mentioned how some people have issues maintaining a desired weight. This is due to over eating during your meals later in the day.
Furthermore, this John Hopkins article writes, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast provides you with the energy and nutrients that lead to increased concentration in the classroom.” This goes to show that students should eat their breakfast before classes. If a person can concentrate more, they will know the material better. Also, they will have to spend less time studying which leaves time for a social life and activities. That is what most students have a problem balancing; a social life and schoolwork. Not only will this balance help a student enjoy their college years more, but the grades will help land that dream job after graduating.
All in all, everyone who wished to excel in life, whether it is schoolwork or any other type of activity, should eat his or her breakfast. The positives clearly outweigh the negatives, with the only negative being waking up fifteen minutes earlier. Now, I encourage all of you to start eating breakfast because I know I sure will.
I found this article interesting because I personally do not eat breakfast. Food early in the morning does not sit well in my stomach. In fact, most times the smell alone of food, specifically breakfast food, early in the morning can make me feel sick. As a result, it is actually more beneficial for me to not eat breakfast early in the morning before class. I have found that the days I do eat breakfast I concentrate less in class as a result of feeling nausea from the food. However, I do see the importance of eating breakfast. According to an article by Healthy Eating, eating breakfast in the morning is especially important because it jump starts your metabolism for the day. While I do see the importance of eating in the morning, as in the case of myself, I think it can vary from person to person.
This was a very interesting article. At home, every day before school I would eat breakfast. I would usually have a bowl of cereal and a piece of fruit. I always felt awake and ready for the day. Now, at college, I never have time to get breakfast. I am not a morning person, so I always wake and leave just enough time to get ready and get to my class. I have noticed that I feel tired throughout the day when I do not eat breakfast. This article has opened my eyes to how important breakfast really is. Even the littlest thing, like a piece of fruit will help wake me up and get me ready for a day of classes.
Though from different countries and with diverse background, we are told almost the same thing! Breakfast does play an essential part in our daily lives and especially for us students who are in the golden phase of our entire lives. I want to add some benefits of our “shining breakfast”.
Did you know that having breakfast may lower diabetes risk? “SUNDAY, June 16 (HealthDay News) — Eating breakfast every day may help overweight women reduce their risk of diabetes, a small new study suggests.” Also, lead researcher Dr. Elizabeth Thomas, an instructor of medicine at the University of Colorado explained, “When women skipped the morning meal, they experienced insulin resistance, a condition in which a person requires more insulin to bring their blood sugar into a normal range.” As now diabetes have been diagnosed within more than 18 million Americans, this simple way to help people lower the risk of the disease seems a good way to go.
This is science, the powerful science we are studying, never stops making differences to this world.
Hi, I am Dongyuan Li. Your topic is very good. We were told do not skip our breakfast since kindergarden. However, lots of kids skip that. I do not like eat breakfast when I was young because I found that it was so hard for me to swallow and chewing food after I just wake up. I ate food slowly, and always not eat enough. As a result, I get hungry. As I grow up, I need to get up eariler to finish my brekfast because school starts earlier. I really hate it. I eat it because I have to. After I go to college, breakfast become easier and I start like breakfast. I began to feel that eaten breakfast well makes me feel more energetic during the morning. I even can feel that my body is absorbing the nutrients. I think I am just grown up. That easy. Hoping more and more people love to eat breakfast after reading your blog.
Growing up I always ate breakfast before school or anything else I did. It was part of my routine. So at college, I do the same thing. I don’t eat a big breakfast maybe just a granola bar or some cereal, but I eat something. If i don’t eat after I wake up now, I get very hungry within the hour and get cranky and can’t focus. So for me, I need to eat something before classes so I am not starving during class and can’t focus.
For as long as I can remember I avoid breakfast, and when I do eat it I just have a granola bar as I am running out the door. Everyone always says that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I have never understood why. Sure you start your day by putting nutrients in it, but what about those of us that physically cant eat in the morning? I guess I’ll just try and make myself hungry in the morning to be able to fill my body with nutrients so I learn better, because lets be real nobody wants to study. If eating in the morning helps me retain information then I guess that makes it totally worth it.
Since coming to college, I have been skipping breakfast every morning. Usually I’m not hungry, and I don’t feel like forcing down food when I don’t want to. I’ve always known that breakfast is the most important meal, but I figured that it would be fine if I just skipped it. According to this article, breakfast is just another meal, and has no effect. They conducted an experiment by splitting up 2 groups of people, people who ate breakfast, and people who skipped breakfast. After 6 weeks, they found that there was no change in cholesterol, blood sugar, or weight loss between the 2 groups. They concluded that this shows that breakfast is not neccesary. Although, they did note that people who are breakfast were more active in the morning, which could be why it’s better to eat breakfast before a class. Even though there isn’t a long-term effect, I will still try to eat breakfast so that I can focus for my classes.
This post is something that we have been told for a long time, but still needs to be reiterated because we all find ourselves not eating breakfast. For me personally, it’s because I need variety with what I’m eating. But have there been actual case studies to show that not eating breakfast affects performance? Or maybe if you eat certain foods then you will do better. http://livehealthy.chron.com/breakfast-foods-stay-focused-2482.html
I found this post very interesting as I myself am a firm believer in starting your day off with a satisfying breakfast. Any book you read, or any health fanatic will tell you the same thing: EAT BREAKFAST! And that is because it actually HELPS you focus, it wakes up your system and HELPS you lose weight. Now, that isn’t to say you should eat a chocolate bar or candy as a breakfast meal, because that artificial sugar turns to fat and spikes your insulin levels only to crash an hour later. It is very important to have fruit and protein in your breakfast meal as that will give you the energy you need to focus and learn while in class. A website you might find interesting is http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/most-important-meal . Nice post!
Actually, I have always eaten breakfast because my mom thinks exactly that way. The whole food-will-help thing. Yet I have to second Brian Dougherty’s opinion, “this might pertain to some people but not everyone.”
While I, personally, do eat breakfast, I know so many people who skips breakfast. Of course, for me, I do feel different if I don’t eat breakfast, but I thought that it was just because I’ve always been used to eating breakfast. So it’s sort of like my body expects food at that time of day. But those of my friends who don’t eat breakfast, they seem to function just fine. Maybe it’s because they’re used to not eating breakfast and that’s why they’re fine without it?
Nevertheless, I will continue to eat breakfast, mainly because I’m already used to it. But it’s good to know that breakfast does really affect us. Now I know what to tell my friends when they skip breakfast.
As I said before in a previous comment, when I was younger I wouldn’t eat breakfast in the morning because it was too early. As I got older I realized it’s better for you to eat breakfast and I’ve also noticed that my performance in school is better when I eat breakfast in the morning. I’m more alert in class but I’m also more energized throughout the day.
Hey Stephen!
I found your blog really interesting because I am definitely someone who never eats breakfast in the morning. Just like everyone else I’ve always been told, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”.
But, according to Dr. Mercola breakfast is NOT the most important part of the day. He states that not having breakfast “can have many important health benefits, from improving your insulin/leptin sensitivity.”
Many scientists also believe that not eating breakfast can help you lose weight.
Now these examples might be a stretch, and maybe I’m just trying to make myself feel better…but it’s worth looking into!
I wonder if this is different for each individual person; in other words, does eating breakfast before class not have any effect on some people? I feel as though just like everything else, this might pertain to some people but not everyone. Personally, I have never eaten breakfast before classes and very rarely eat breakfast at all and I feel as though I do fairly well in school. In addition, I never ate anything within two or three hours before a sporting event and I always performed to the best of my ability. I believe it may be a personal thing whether your body requires fuel or not before class or a sporting event for your brain or body to perform at maximum capability. With that being said, I will try to eat more often before my first class and see if I perform better throughout the day or if my hypothesis is correct in saying my brain and body do not require an early morning boost of fuel in the form of bacon and eggs.
