What does it feel like to be immortal?

old-person

This will be my last post of the SC 200, so I am going to talk about the most interesting thing in my mind. Everyone has watched the movie about immortal people, they can not be killed, or die naturally. Human has pursed immortal throughout history, but we haven’t succeeded. What does it really feel like to be immortal? Is that a bless or a curse?

Lets talk about the advantages of immortal first. One of the human’s greatest fear is the fear of death. When you are immortal, you don’t need to worry about that. you can do everything you want to do, go anywhere you want, not afraid of times run out and getting old. You will stay young forever if you get immortal when you are young. You won’t get sick, or get any physically injury. You got unlimited time, from Before Chris to Universe Century. You get to meet all kinds of culture, from the great roman empire to United Federation of Planets. You can witness history, join the first Olympics, fight with King Arthur or have dinner with Abraham Lincoln. Your journey will never stop!

Your body will never get old, but your mind will. Thinking about living for thousands of years. After experience all the changes of the world, you will get tired of changes. You stop to find things interesting. You need to move very often, in case other people find out your secret. You will feel lonely all the time. All your friends are long gone, so do your relatives. Some time in your life, or many times, you will meet the person you love. You may tell her your story, and you are together. But that person will die eventually, and you won’t. You will keep thinking about them. You will find out that you are actually outside the world. There is no place for you. At the end, you will be the last one, forever…

No one can stand alone forever, even he or she is immortal. In my mind, that is the curse, the worst curse. Imagine standing on the top of the mountain, realized that you are the only human in the universe and you will always be. But all of that is just my own opinion. There is no way for us to know what the immortal really feel, maybe they already move beyond human, maybe they live in their own world happily forever. How will you feel?  cracked thatsreallypossible

Some ideas from movies and TV: “The Man from Earth”, “In Time”, “Forever”, “Interstellar”

Hope everyone has a great year!!!

Having even one person on this Earth who would be immortal would be a huge resource to everyone else. Now I know I’m not addressing the immortal person themselves, but I think it is still equally as interesting to think of the people around them as the immortal itself. History could be definite and we could know, in more detail than we could ever imagine, the mysteries of ancient civilizations and people. Religious beliefs could be confirmed, evolution could be proven, or a whole new idea of how the world as we know it came into being could be gained from the knowledge of a single immortal being. There is a movie called “It’s Such A Beautiful Day” that I have seen in the past. Towards the end it depicts the main character as becoming immortal and outliving everything that come and goes on Earth and Earth itself until he is literally nothing because he can become no more because there is no more. It is a very interesting film that I would suggest anyone to check out.

This can be the most interesting blog I have never read! Ever. Your assumption caught my eyes when I browsed the title. Whenever past or present, wherever west or east, people always wish to be immortal. Cause there’s nobody who really becomes immortal, people in the past depicted gods. For me, I may not very happy to be immortal. Human can easily get used to new things. After I knew every single things in this world, what’s next? may be kind of boring for a god.

    I love Fall Out Boy~

Being immortal will allow the mind to mature to such a degree that we will never be able to experience. Humans are only capable of accomplishing so much during their lifetimes. But, if one lifetime was simply never to end, think of the possibilities. The mind will constantly build upon itself, allowing that person to grow more and more wise. One of my friends complains that we will never be able to solve a majority of the mysteries of the universe because there is not enough time in a life for a mind to learn everything. And although findings can be recorded and explained, it still takes time to learn and process the information that has been given to them (although this definitely helps). The artificial learning talked about in the article below may be the answer; if we can build robots that learn like humans and retain information, they may be able to help society with advancing forward.

Very interesting article. Being alone and immortal are two things that a person could interestingly cherish or hate. As animals and conscious humans, we strive on an everyday basis to achieve our safety. For us Americans, historically it may seem like we isolate ourselves with our weapons and big stick to maintain our strive for almost immortality. Ironically, we all know that this is impossible yet we compete to see who will come up on top. It comes down to our animal incentives, that being the survival of the fittest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survival_of_the_fittest

Very interesting post. I always thought morality is a honored gift. But you put great points into the post. I feel as if at some point your are just existing and not living. Life is made up of an up and down battle between learned lessons and even better mistakes, without we believe it would be peaceful; I believe it would be boring,
