Can music: the one that make you cry

I love marvel movies. I just love them. Being a Chinese, I had a childhood without most of the comic like Ironman, fantasy 4, Spiderman, I fall in love with the franchise as soon as I watch the first movie. But something always got me thinking—why I always can feel the mood of the characters in the movies? I mean, the marvel franchise is good, but not the best. Then how come they can make such pleasant mood? Not only the movies, even the trailers? So I when to research it. From that, I learn what is a so called “can music”.

The reasonthat can music calls a can music, is defiantly not because it was held inside of a can. It’s more like a pre-complete music, with specific mood label on it. So when you have a crying scene, you can just find the tape that labels “sad” on it and put it on the video, just that simple.

The first can be music was mentioned in a passage of Motion Picture Patents Company, also label them with mood, then the artist can find them quickly when they need to use it in videos. Put it in a more interesting way to describe it, the can music system is more like a huge shelf, all the different type of feeling and mood correspond to a thousand diverse music, just take it when ever you need it. However, can music was not first applying on movies. In the early days, it was always used in commercials and trailers.

Another very important part of the can music, it always comes with the word “epic”, the easiest style that the audience will be reached on. The harmony is still the most common but also the most important. This always allows the song expresses a complete feeling and has a stronger scene of what is going to happen next. On the instruments that most of the can music nowadays will use are 3 main types combine together: the theme park use laboratories, then follow the chordophones, the drums are in the background. It was first seen in the Bourne identity franchise. Later be used widely in Hollywood.

So next time when you watch a movie, don’t be surprised that you will feel happy or sad at certain point, because when we watching the movies, we are just the pineapple in the can, and we can do nothing about it.

Procrastination: What is it and How to fix it?

Procrastination, a word that in nowadays are wildly used in the social media by the teenagers, which use mostly use to describe the urge of playing a video game or spend some time with friends instead of doing homework. But scientifically it could be a serious problem, and it will not just bring you a grounded week for your poor English grade from your parents.

Procrastination does not constitute a new creation from modern society, but a long last bad hobby that inherits from the earliest human ancestors. However, it was never being valued as a huge problem for the society until late 1970. While then, procrastination is already being an unalterable that swiping through the human society. According to research that 80%~95% of college students are dealing with the procrastination but without a proper method (Ellis & Knaus, 1977; O’Brien, 2002, as cited in Steel, 2007). Since then most countless research tries to solve this mysterious psychological phenomenon.

Medically speaking, procrastination is a syndrome that combines anxiety, stress which is potentially caused by mental disorder. By definition, procrastination has three stand rules for evaluation:

1, it will stop patients from achieving their per-set goal, with no actual effect, only stall the time.

2, procrastination will bring the patient’s stress, guilt, panic and low efficiency, along with failing other’s truth, cause an impression of unable to assume responsibility.

3, phenomenon mentions before will become a cycle, will have a further impact on patient’s life.

It supposes to be a serious mental health issue, however most of the people who have it or even the psychologist will deny it’s existent, but those who are suffering a profound impact on life do need help and assistance. Nonetheless, before that, we have to indicate that what was your course of one’s procrastinate occur—-physiological, or just huge stress. From my point of view, the only way to solve the procrastination is to attend therapy, plan ahead and want to do everything right with help.

Most of the researcher find that the highest rating reasons that trigger procrastination is “the task was unpleasant, or that was boring and uninteresting”. Also this might trigger “well is the nature of our hunter-gatherer brains: By their design, more interest is expressed in urgent tasks than abstract tasks in the future”. These types of people are unable to have a clear concept of the impending deadline. Therefore, they have low self-efficiency and low self-esteem that put them in a tough position when they are assigned to a non-immediate task. Also depression can be the trigger of the procrastination. In the following passage, I’m mainly going to focus on 2 types of causes: A.D.H.D., a neural mental disorder; and which is more prevalent, stress and anxiety.

A.D.H.D., as known as A.D.D., or full length name “Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder”, one of the most common disorders that will be diagnosis in kids’ childhood. The syndromes include inattention, impulsively, and hyperactivity. Most of the time it will genteelly disappear while people grow up, however some percentage of adult still suffer from the A.D.H.D. and some scientists believe that this might also the cause of procrastination, but officially not was recognized. The A.D.H.D. has a lot of in common with procrastination, but it was diagnostic base on neural pathology, and can be controlled by medication. The biological reason for someone to have A.D.H.D. is mainly due to its cerebellum’s malfunction.

Stress/anxiety/academic cause procrastination is very different from the A.D.H.D.procrastination. Although both of them link to dopamine secretion malfunction, Stress/anxiety/academic cause procrastination is from nurture. Opposite of with A.D.H.D. procrastination, these types of patients are usually from the procrastination of a complicated task.

Despite the fact that there are medications for procrastination cause by A.D.H.D., most of these medicines are strictly controlled neural enhancer, such as amphetamine and Modafinil. These medications can significantly enhance your cognition, memory and study ability. However, such a strong performance will cause drugs abuse. Experiment indicates that in taking these medications without doctors’ prescription will lead to panicking, hyper active, even schizophrenia. As I say at the beginning, the best way to overcome this problem. Is through therapy and certain technique.

Attend therapy is always a good point to begin. Licensed therapist can assist you in determining the cause of your procrastinations. They will have specific solutions for most of your stress or anxiety. Even will have medication to assist in. Most of them will put you through a test to indicate your stress level. Anxiety level and about your problem, then tries to talk you through it. They will help you draw a plan which will apply back on your feet.

If you can’t get a hold on a therapist, another very effective approach that could help you to overcome the problem is call pomodoro technique. It was developed by a man named Francesco Cirillo in last 1980s. It works as a method that could help people organize their time and task. It can be imagined as a board with blank square, which you can break down your big task in to several small task to complete.

Graphdiyine, the new miracle product?

When two scientists, Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, inventors of Graphene, the science world started a “graphene Fever”, almost all of the physic scientist started some study of the Graphene. However, same year in China, something call Graphdiyne was invented in a national lab, which can value as much as the invent of the Graphene. Why? Because for the last several decades, most of the research of the carbon is synthesis and isolated new form of carbon, which people are getting pretty good at it. After people found Fullerene—the ball shape, carbon nanotube—the tube one and the flatted, paper like Graphene. All of these new develop material was be consider as good electricity use, good of light conduct, most of these material will going to play a huge part of the next evolution of the human society—the information innovation. But what does Graphdiyne feet in all these? Because this new toy that made from carbon has better property than all of above.

In 1968, Baughman calculated that Graphdiyne could exist in a stable form, but no one has been able to synthesis it. Until 2010, the China National science institute use a specific type of benzene and copper as catalyzer, successfully synthesis this new product, Graphdiyne on a small piece of copper. It has a lot of carbon bonding, a massive conjunction system, wide surface gap, very stable chemistry property, it was known as one of the most stable carbon-base man made material. This material was so miracle that it just has all of the cool properties include a excellent enhancer of a modern day battery and good elastic, which makes it also step on the stage of future.

Taylor Wilson: Mama I want a Star!

This time I’m not going to talk about a technology, but a person who’s about the same age with me, but already working on how to change the earth into a better place. A real life inspiration.

maxresdefault

Kids can really change the world.

I never believe that phrase before I know Taylor Wilson from the Ted talk he made. He is one hell of a kid. By how, let me ask you a question: What were you doing when you were 14? Me? Watching anime at home and tries to figure how to get my new DS. But Taylor, this amazing kid, build a fusion reactor in a garage and become the 32th and the youngest person who preform a Deuterium Fusion reaction, then he met the president for a science project that he made, which is a nuclear weapon detector that could crush the detector that NSA is currently using.

6-1-2006-13

What’s up with this kid?

Well as far as I know, he just works really hard on fulfilling his dream. His family background was so normal that most of the people who are reading this will have a much more interesting background than him. He was born in Arkansas in 1994. His family has nothing special—not even rich. His dad was a low level worker at the local Coca-Cola factory. His mom was a yoga teacher. He was just a normal kid to everyone else until he was 5 years old. On his birthday, he is a crane. But when his parents brought him to the toy store, he screams at them and asks for a real one.

Fast forward to when he was 11. After he tries to make jet fuel but instead he figures how to build a homemade bomb and create a huge mushroom cloud in his back yard. His grandma decides to bring him back to a life of a normal child. She decide to give him a book. The book was called the radioactive boy scout, their story is about a kid study nuclear reactor at home and at the end the boy scout was picked up by the police. Ironically, this is was in fact the book that triggers Taylor’s “nuclear fever”. Starting with borrowing a Geiger’s meter, he started to scavenge radioactive object. In the end, their garage be come such a dangerous place that when people ask him “is that broken bottle as the same with the one you said that’s going to kill us if it breaks?” he will answer “be cool, not so fast.”

At the age of 13, his father decides to send him to the Davis College. There he met his mentor Dr. Ronald Phaneuf. From that point, he starts to make yellow cake, listen to the high level of physic class, eventually build a fusion reactor. Two years ago, he was graduated from high school and give a Ted talk, review his project of a new, cheap, safe and highly efficient nuclear power plant. Which can last at least 30 years.

All of these begin with a child word with her mom: ”mom. I want to creat a star in the garage”.

3D without glasses? Too good to be true.

屏幕快照 2015-12-04 上午6.01.09 I a huge fan of crowded funding since I was in High school. The reason I’m in to this as you will always be amazed that how far people will go in order makes their dream come true. Lots of amazing things that kickstarter and indiegogo—some of the biggest crowd funding website in the world—give birth to, like smart watches, a cool geeky gadget, headphones and movies. And today, When I just hang around on the web side, I came across this.

My first reaction is very difficult to describe. The only words I can say is, wow.

That tells me I got to be that Jarvis in Ironman film very soon!

With that excitement, I scroll down.

This company sells their product “Bleen”and clam that they can project a 3D image into thin air without any medium, as large as 2.5 meters. Also, the “Bleem” CPU is all costume made and extremely fast. They have two products, but basically have the same function: project things in to thin air. It’s seems that if you bought their product, your life will become like this:

Young woman sitting in music studio

Young woman sitting in music studio

How cool is that!

However, as a tech-geek/nerd, I just could not think so what just happened. The reason is very simple: some of the largest company like google and Microsoft, they only have existing product like hololens or google glass that could preform a sort-of reality enhancement; the most famous company of producing Holograns is Oculus is still struggling with how to not make people dizzy. It’s just very hard to believe that such an anonymous company can achieve such a great innovated product. Nonetheless, then, things start to get wired.

First is the amount of the backer. There were only 320 backers for this project, with 66816 US dollars. However, this program was launched in October 2014, and promises that they will have their product finish at around the same time next year. The twitter of them, however, shows a different story. Their last update as at March,18th, 2015, then, they just disappear. Then it’s not hard to imagine that this is just a tech-scam and hundreds of people arguing at the command zone for their money.

Everything about this team was so real: Vladimir Titar, a Ukrain scientist used to the leader of the team, clam that he had worked with a Nobel Prize winner. However, now the page was deleted and no traces for anyone else.

Nonetheless, they never even answer the theory properly, just like the response from them to their own backer below:

屏幕快照 2015-12-04 上午6.38.02

But like me and the backer’re words: it just too good to be true.

Li-Fi: is this the future?

Li-Fi

“do you have Wi-Fi here? ”

“what the password of your Wi-Fi? ”

Depending on my observation, these are the most common thing that people will ask in 21th century when they arrive a restaurant, hotel or house of a friend. No doubt that Internet has already became one of the most important thing in our day to day life: when we woke up, we check our WhatsApp for any contact and read the wall street journal from our smart; then after breakfast we sit in our car and turn on the google map on our way to company; we use yelp to look for a restaurant at noon and watch video from YouTube while you are waiting your sandwich. People just can’t live without internet these days.

Still, people complain—-it’s the human nature. People are always complaining about they can’t get a stable connection, the download speed is tantamount to slow, blah, blah, blah. But you can’t blame them. Wi-Fi is not the fastest thing you can get—if you are using a copper wire or a light fiber it will be much faster. Nevertheless, the portable device always sacrifices the port for the portability, so wireless connection is the only option they have. However, the nightmare of horrible Wi-Fi might will not exist for that. People Oxford has already found a solution.

Li-Fi, as known as tLTE-WiFi-LiFihe light Wi-Fi, is one of the newest inventions from the very-smart-people from Oxford. It does not have to transfer data from a Wi-Fi signal. Instead od invisible wave, they use diode emit light and develop an algorithm for it to transform it into a data signal in order to be transferred data. It originally was developed by a Garman professor named Harald Hass, a leading engineer for led bubs, the final product was invented in Fudan University in China in 2013.

9fff8e91-7c30-449c-820a-efd7873e6c59-1423773926133Theoretically, the Li-Fi can transmit up to 7Tbps, way more than the 7Gbps of the Wi-Fi. The light fiber takes the advantage of the property of light that then it reflects, it’s not going to lose much of a signal. It’s very similar idea for the Li-Fi, but instead of utilizing a medium, the Li-Fi will transmit data in the air with no delay. For this, the system needs a computer guide laser projector on the roof top, with controllable direction for the laser. All of this is for accomplishing the goal of 100Gbps for the transmission—yes, way lower than the theoretical value and with a very strict rule—the light has to be project on to the receiver without anything in it’s path, in early 2015 they can only use inferred for this system, however few days ago they announce that clam they had a breakthrough which now allow them to use visible light to transmit data, which has a theoretical speed of 50Gbps with a stable connection.

Obviously, it’s not a method of replacing Wi-Fi in the next few years, but it’s going to be useful for the foreseeable future. Now it’s still growing, on its long way to slater the monster called delay. Nonetheless, he is a real good base.research

What does sunflower do at night?

Since I was very young, probably kindergarten, I had been told that the sun flower will change the direction their face according to the position of the sun. I was convincing that this was right for many years, until this was stick into my face.

b1e0790b62539c515e6f9eab01e95ef0_r

Hmmmmm…….seems pretty normal, isn’t it? Take another look. Did you spot what’s wrong?

Yes! The sun was at the opposite side of the flower! What the heck?

sleep-or-drink-coffee?I think that’s what’s in the flower’s mind.

Enough for the jokes. From the previous picture, we found a question: why didn’t the flower follow the sun?

Tend to bend toward This is a phenomenon called Heliotropism.

There are several things that was misunderstand by common citizens.

1, Only the non-mature Sun flower will follow the sun. they are growing, not turning.

As the simple biology indicates, almost all plants with green leaves are heliotropism, because when a plant was shine by the sunlight, then the stein started to grow, higher and stronger. As the sun shining the light on the flower, it also deviated, rather than stay at the same spot. So, each side of the stein will be shine and grow. When it grow, it will elongated, then because one side of the stein is longer than the other side, it will bend. Because when it bend it will bend to a different direction, so it will be misunderstand as following the sun. This is as known as Heliotropism misconception.

F1.large

When the sunflower is matured, then it doesn’t have to grow, then obviously it will not grow, hence it will not turn, move or produce sunlight to fight zombie. It will just become a regular flower, stand still, and do nothing at day, or  at night.

What will happen if 3D printing is 100x faster?

3dprinting is not even a new concept. 5 years ago, there were already companies that producing 3D printer with extremely low efficiency and accuracy. Five years later, 3D printer are all over kiskstarter or indiegogo. Now days technologies are developing so fast that 3D printing has already one step in to everyone’s life. The accuracy of 3D printing can go as small as nanometer, with producing a object that you can never build with a mold. For example, a hollo ball without any joint. If you own a 3D printer, you can almost manufacture anything you want with it, as long as you can find a blue print on the internet. However, all of the 3D printer has fatal flaw—speed. To 3D print a object will take hours, even with the simplest structure. This problem and bottleneck of innovation is due to the fundamental method of 3D printing: print 2D layer by layer, until it become 3D. But there is one particular firm make a break through—Carbon3D, clam that they could accelerated the process by 100 times faster.

CILPThe reason that they could be so fast is because they have a very different approach than the traditional method, which they call it CLIP, stand for Continuous Liquid Interface Production. The core idea is that they develop a specific type of resin that will solidify when they where shine by a specific type of light. The beam of light shines at the bottom of the machine, shine a specific pattern on the resin, then use a hanger to draw it up. By this method, not only the speed will increase dramatically, also the surface of the object will be very smooth, and the speed will only limited by the resin cure rates and viscosity.

carbon2

Try to imagine the future of this technology. Sure that this method will never able to print any metal object, but I’m convince that the era of polymer will come way much faster than we think. Sooner or later, we will be able to manufacture polymer that has the hardness of steel and the weight of a piece of paper. With this technology, we will be able to change the fundamental way of production. 3D printing will and has to be the symbol of next generation, not only because it’s speciality that aloud it to construct digital object, also reduce waste of land and be more eco-friendly, because if we can manufacture at home fast and simple, why bother for amazon?

Attention! This block post contain very disgusting pics!

Are you SURE?

Ok.

When you think of a parasite, what will you think of?

Well, let’s google.

The first two pictures are here:

images Horsehair_Worm_(14629048952)

These little things are disgusting, intimidating, but normal: liner body shape, look just like a normal worm but attach a creature in a very disgusting way. However, if you rate the horrifying level for these pictures for a scale of 5 out of 10, the third picture will be 500. Here it is.

these-6-horrifying-parasites-will-make-your-skin-crawlarticle-2109278-12009E72000005DC-688_634x822article-2109278-12009DC0000005DC-219_634x713

The name of this nightmare creature is named Cymothoa exigua, ad known as tongue-eating louse. First time seeing this was on a British newspaper, daily mail. The journalist give the title “alien parasite”, claimed that it was first found in Spain and named “Betty” after the person who found it(but seriously who will name this creature after their own name?!). After I done some research, I figure this is not a new species, but a is a parasitic crustacean of the family Cymothoidae. It was known that they will climb in to fishes’ mouth, settle on their tongue, drain as much blood as they can until the tongue was necrotized. Then, they will eat the tongue and attach their tail to the fish, replace the tongue with their own body and transform from parasitic to symbiosis, share the food with the fish, also decrease it’s life expectancy.

Cold Welding--Space operation‘s Nightmare

Common knowledge is what rules our daily life. But once a while something you read or see will just smash your common sense in to the wall, then stood beside it and laugh. Something I know this week does exactly that to me involved a satellite, also a phenomenon performed by a term which we will refer it to our life every single day: metal.

Normally, when you put two metal block which made of identical material, nothing interesting should happened. However, if you recreated this environment in space, you will get a completely different result: they will become one chunk and can not be split again. Sounds unbelievable, isn’t it? This phenomenon is as known as “Cold Welding”, which is a very cool thing that could happened in vacuum. Because when two chunk of metal were place against each other in vacuum, there was absolutely nothing between them, hence, they will recognize them as a unity. Quote from Richard Feynman, one of the most humor scientist in the world, “The reason for this unexpected behavior is that when the atoms in contact are all of the same kind, there is no way for the atoms to “know” that they are in different pieces of copper. When there are other atoms, in the oxides and greases and more complicated thin surface layers of contaminants in between, the atoms “know” when they are not on the same part.”

But why will this has anything due to a space mission of a satellite? In matter of fact, it almost destroys a muti-billion space operation. In Oct,9th, 1989, NASA launch a spacecraft name “Galileo”in to the space, which has a primarily use of gathering data of Jupiter. Because the distance between the earth and the Jupiter is so far, the scientist in NASA design a special antenna for the spacecraft in order to complete the mission. This “High-gain Antenna” could transmit about 80k per second back to the earth when it’s functional, and it was elaborately design into an umbrella structure to maintain a small size in order to transport. After one and a half years sailing in to the space, the “Galileo” arrived Jupiter at April 10th, 1991. However, the scientists can’t be able to launch the Antenna. After thousands of speculation, the scientists narrow it down to a very simple but lethal malfunction: the main mobile structure was stick together because of the cold welding phenomenon, and at last they end up using the low-gain Antenna, which has 0.01% efficiency of the original Antenna. Sad story.

I’m so EXCITED!!!!!

Before I started the class I thought I’m going to be boring and we just look at all the numbers and datas and disguise it.

But is a totally different class when I took it!

WE ARE GONNA TALK ABOUT ZOMBIE!

I can’t be more despreate to have this class.

See you guys tomorrow!
