Can we tell when females are experiencing serious life changes by examining their hair styles?

Life is full of changes and we all experience them daily. But is there a possibility that we can tell if a female is going through a dramatic change in her life by looking at her hair? Celebrity females such as Britney Spears, and Miley Cyrus have supported this phenomenon. Popular publishers such as Style Elixir, Thought Catalog, and ABC News have spoken out about the possible psychological correlation with females and their hair.

The well-respected Coco Chanel once stated that, “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.” In 2007, when pop star Britney Spears shaved her head, fans all over the world were astonished. At the time it put Britney’s life in the spot light with new reporting covering the story on hundreds of stations. The pop icon had shaved random sections of her hair off leaving her appearance to be almost senile. At the time her and her ex-fiancé had been divorced, but were now in a custody dispute over her children. Britney’s life had been in the spotlight and seemingly chaotic. An ABC News article had statements of a psychoanalyst proclaiming, “I think the shaving of her hair is a fresh start, is a new beginning, taking matters into her own hands, doing it her own way,” ABC NEWS says the pop artists was “seeking a rebirth” at the time. They inform the idea that Spears was able to capture this rebirth, and control of her life, by taking control of her hair. The New York Post published a leading article in 2012, with the title “Britney Spears shaved her hair off in 2007 to cover up a drug use: ex aide”. Although Spears’ motives to cutting her hair are not definite, the counter argument reasoning of her ex-aide continues to support this phenomenon behind the female mind. If the pop star had not been going through an emotional change, her decision to cover up her drug use by cutting he hair still shows of her going through something dramatic in her life.

Another pop artist, Miley Cyrus has been filling article headlines with controversies ever since her departure from the Disney sitcom “Hannah Montana”. In the year of 2012 Cyrus was in a relationship and profoundly happy. Her hair was full cut short and her attire was the normal girly chic. It was not until the year of 2013, after the separation of her and her boyfriend, it became evident that Miley had been going through an extreme state of sorrow. Drastic changes had been made to not only her attire, but her hair as well. Cyrus had decided to release a song entitled, “Wrecking Ball“. This song allowed the public to hear the ideas and feeling of Cyrus’ mind, coming from a place of her being emotionally distraught. From the year of 2013 up to the year of 2015 the impact of Cyrus’ breakup with her boyfriend, is still shown as a possible influence on the way she conducts herself in society today. Not only has her style of music become more vulgar and her outfits are less than conservative.

In 2013, Britney Spears decided to dye her hair brunette. The Huffington Post Style article entitled, “Britney Spears Goes Brunette: Analyzing The ‘Psychology’ Of Changing Your Hair Color (PHOTOS)“, has written excerpts from hairstylists, stating “People mostly go redder or blonder, because they associate it as being sexy or sexier…”, and people with brunette hair want to appear more “reserved”. As Spears had been in the spotlight mainly as a blonde she has now managed to step back from the spotlight.

I myself have watched numerous females in my life from a young age, a lot of them had constantly been changing their hair for something “new”. I’ve witnessed family friends cutting their hair just a couple of days after the finalization of their divorce.A brief excerpt from Thought Catalog described this process as “a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis.”

If you ask a female in your family if she agrees with the psychological process of this statement, she’ll be likely to agree with it.

I do believe females change their hairstyle upon serious life changes. For example, sometimes they will be used to blending in with everyone and want to be spontaneous so they will dye their hair a bright, new color. Also, sometimes they use their hair to reflect how they feel and with what is currently going on in their life. For example, shaving their head will usually mean something negative is impacting them. Additionally, i have notices how girls sometimes go lighter in the summer and darker in the winter months. Im not sure if it is because they are happier in the summer and less happy in the winter with the cold. Either way the sun is still out during the seasons, just varying the amount of hours of sunlight. One of these hairstyles resulting from mood could end up becoming the new “thing” one day.
