Job Summary

The Signal Instructor will be responsible for managing all Signal & Communications Division training programs to meet a variety of Systemwide Maintenance and Improvement Department needs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Direct curriculum and develop documentation as necessary to expand training programs for new equipment and coordinate all training facility activities.
  • Develop, organize and implement classroom and on-the-job training programs for a variety of needs.
  • Supervise training personnel and assign preventative maintenance programs.
  • Schedule and coordinate with supervisors the classroom and on-the-job training to minimize any impact on regular personnel assignment.
  • Remain current with the MBTA’s Safety Plan as well as the position’s outline responsibilities.
  • Conduct classroom training sessions when necessary.
  • Keep accurate training records on all students.
  • Maintain up-to-date training programs by establishing ongoing communications with educational services and vendors.
  • Work with Signal Inspectors to keep curriculum current.
  • Establish and maintain an audiovisual library of instructional material.
  • Direct the development of technical manuals for instructional and reference purposes.
  • Evaluate existing training programs and provide suggestions for modifications and improvements.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites and to assist at emergencies and/or events as needed.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed in accordance with Article 10.4  of the Alliance of Unions agreement.
  • Respond or report to work as directed by supervisory personnel for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective relationship with employees.
  • Assist in the management of a workforce by ensuring fair and consistent application and strict adherence to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the Authority including the EEO, Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment and Anti-Retaliation policies.
  • Perform related duties and projects as assigned
  • Minimum Requirements/Qualifications
    • Five (5) years of experience in signal maintenance in a railroad or transit environment.
    • A high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) with the ability to comprehend, communicate and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
    • Effective organization skills.
    • Excellent customer service and training skills.
    • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and/or PeopleSoft applications.
    • The ability to pass:  background screenings; a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check; and the MBTA’s medical requirements, including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screening.
    • Have a satisfactory work record including overall employment, job performance, discipline and safety records.  For internal candidates, the aforementioned applies to the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of this posting.   Infractions and/or offenses occurring after the closing of the posting and before the filling of a vacancy may preclude a candidate from consideration.
    • The ability to supervise and work effectively with a diverse workforce.

    PREFERENCE INCLUDE:

    • A technical degree or certification in electronic or electrical engineering
    • Maintenance training from a technical institute
    • Electrician’s MA state license
    • A related Instructor certification from an accredited institution; and/or experience in a training capacity
    • Related experience in a supervisory capacity

    LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

    • Possession of a valid Driver’s License

    1) As part of the interview process, applicants will be expected to give a maximum of a ten (10) minute presentation.
