Reflection Notes (20%)

Due:
9pm Sunday & Tuesday evenings
9pm two days after a lecture/presentation/performance

In addition to the course writing assignments, you must provide reading and listening notes for class activities, including reactions to guest lectures. Twenty percent of your grade is determined through this activity. You are expected to contribute frequently and thoughtfully, through the comment section on this website.

For the readings, you must post your reflection notes by 9pm on Sunday evenings before the readings are discussed in class. For lectures, you must attend at least four lectures/performances over the course of the semester, and comment on them in the “Events” section.

At the end of each month, the teaching assistant will notify you of your performance in this area. Previously, we had an ANGEL discussion forum where individual points were given out for each note. If there is a lack of participation in this new format, we may revert to that system. Your timely reflections are an integral part of the course format, so performance in this section of the course is critical for course functioning.

Your notes should include your thoughts on the reading or lecture, generally answering the following questions:

  • What does having done the reading or heard the lecture mean to your current or future practice of architecture?
  • What do you agree with?
  • What do you disagree with (you must disagree with something)?
  • What did you try to—but still don’t—understand?
  • Why does this writer’s or speaker’s work matter to the field of architecture?

Note that your attendance at lectures is required for the full class period—i.e., typically 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Please be considerate if leaving before the end of the event.
