Civic Issues

Why we actually vote

Voting is an amazing privilege that all of us are elliable for at the age of 18. We can vote for our mayor at the state level to congressmen at the national level. Choices can be difficult to make, especially when it comes to electing a leader. Essentially, the person you select has a huge part in your life. From raising taxes to deducting public funding, there is a lot of pressure to selecting the “right” candidate. After looking at numerous polls, I discovered some of the most popular qualities people look to before making their final decision.

Party Affiliation

Are you democrat, republican or independent? Either way, most people find themselves choosing a political party and voting for who ever is on their “team”. By knowing the party, the public is able to assume what their positions are on certain issues and quickly make their decisions. For example, since republicans tend to favor policies that state run and favor corporations, a businessman might associate themselves with this party  because it carters this preferences. As a result, that same person will vote for all republicans most likely in elections because he know the benefits he will receive.  This person would not have to listen to the republican candidate speak because of their preconceived ideas. This affiliation applies to our lazy side simply because we are deciding to go with the team’s ideas (i.e.:our political party).

Physical Appearance

As much as we hate to admit it, looks do matter. This does not mean that the candidates must look like models in order to win, but instead must contain physical qualities exuding leadership. This can include looking slightly middle aged with grey hair to symbolize experience. This is why congressman and other electives tend to be old because voters feel as though they can trust them. Unfortunately, age can also be a double-edge sword. For example, one of the reasons why John McCain lost the 2008 election, was because he looked too old to the publics’ eye. His selection of  Sarah Palin also did not reassure the audience because in their eyes, they saw Palin as the new president, which very few could truly grasp.

Ideals

Psychological stances are key for some people when voting. These positions range from the importance of family to religious affiliations. Many feel that if the candidate is close to their personal family, they can trust them and even like them as a person. Religion affiliations are crucial for others when making a decision. In fact, President Kennedy is the only American president to be catholic. This distinction raised controversy, as some questioned his loyalty to their country. Since he was Catholic, would the Pope become the leader because he is their savior? These were questions that constantly circulated, but President Kenndey will managed to win by a landslide.

First Impressions

As cliche as it sounds, everyone judges a book by it cover, but it is best to not let your first judgements dictate your decision completely. Give candidates a chance to defend themselves. This way of choice is the laziest out of all reasons to vote. We don’t even use party affiliation, we ,instead just follow our “gut” feeling. Personally I disagree with this method because emotions are illogical. At least with other techniques, it is possible to make some what of an accurate decision because there is concrete proof.

Media

The media is the most influential over the public. Based on how the media portrays certain candidates, people can easily form an opinion and decide to like them or not. There are also news channels that tend to cater to certain political parties. This also enhances and encourages party affiliation. For example, Fox News is a conservative network that panders to republican ideals. On the contrary, MSNBC is more liberal in how they report stories causing them to be favored by democrats. Either or, it is still enforcing you to always agree your political party. Since the channels are favor a side of the political spectrum, the viewers rarely receive a chance to hear the other side of the argument.

The best way to make your choice is by self diligence. Choose a candidate because you did your research and support him completely. The less effort you put into voting, the less weight your reasons are behind you complaints about the government.

Top 5 Oscar Snubs

As a movie enthusiast, the Oscars is the Holy Grail to me. It is an awards ceremony that recognizes some of the best films of the year. But sometimes there are movies that do not get recognized enough or entirely. These unlucky few are called snubs. Here are my top 5 movies that either did not receive a nomination or did not win when it was well deserved.

5. Quvenzhané Wallis – Hushpuppy (Beast of the Southern Wild)

Performed at the age of four, Quvenzhané Wallis plays a little girl, named Hushpuppy, who is faced with both her hot-tempered father’s fading health and melting ice-caps that flood her small town outside of New Orleans. Through the eyes of a child, she must learn the ways of courage and love while coping with the aftermath of a natural disaster. Quvenzhané made film history for being nominated as the youngest best  leading actress. Her maturity and talent exceed well beyond her years, but unfortunately she lost to Meryl Streep in 2012.

4.Anthony Perkins – Norman Bates (Psycho)

One of the most suspenseful films of all time, Pyscho has several twist and turns that no one saw coming. And like the movie, no one saw Anthony Perkins not receiving at least a nomination for the 1961 Oscars. Responsible for the biggest twist in movie history, people frowned at the Academy for missing this nomination. If you have not seen this movie, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, I recommend you rent it immediately. You will be surprised by how many references other movies have emulated.

3.John Cazale – Fredo Corleone (The Godfather Part: 2)

With Micheal (Al Pacino) now in charge, Cazale plays an awkward and sweet, and so very mournful of the old days. When he finally blurts his reasons for turning on his brother, it’s with the resentment of a child. It is because of Fredo’s character, that the audience is able to feel for Micheal as his heart begins in harden. The audience is also also to witness Micheal grown ambiguously because of his relations with brother Fredo. Cazale portrayed Fredo correctly in the character being the catalysis to Micheal’s growth. Unfortunately the Academy awarded Cazale’s performance with no nomination. Pacino was nominated and won the Oscar for Best Leading Actor in 1975.

2. Christopher Nolan, Hans Zimmer- Director/ Music composer (The Dark Knight)

The Dark Knight broke records when it first appeared in theaters. Before Avatar, it held the top spot for higher grossing film. It also brought us the BWAAS that were popular in every movie soundtrack and changes the game for all super hero movies. But none of this impressed, the Academy. Their response was to only nominate Heath Ledger as best supporting actor. Dark Knight paved the way for, not only darker super hero movies, but also ruled the growing demand dark films entirely. Nolan is one of the few innovative directors that still writes their own screen play. this meaning that he, not only manages the actors, but writes the stories himself. Similarly, Zimmer is also a creative artist that continues to set trends and move the bar higher for all musical composers. But luck next time, you too!

1. Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg, Danna Ivey, Oprah Winfrey – Cast (The Color Purple)

Accredited highly for its emotional appeal and storytelling, the film, directed by Steven Spielberg, takes place mostly in rural Georgia, centering around the life of an African-American women in the 1930s. It  addresses numerous issues including African Americans exceedingly low position in American social culture. The entire cast all perform amazingly, as they bring tears of joy and saddness out of the audience. As one of the biggest surprises in film history, The Color Purple did not receive one oscar nomination in any category. Till this day people question what made the Academy dislike the movie.

This I Believe Rough Draft

Breathe. Focus. Relax. All I needed to do was get the ball into a cup that was five feet away. I made these all the time in practice, but why did this one feel different.? Five feet became 10, 20, 30 ft. My heart began to pound as a thought of all the worst possibilities. It was a warm spring day in Georgia, but air had never felt so heavy and cold. My body began to tremble as I stood over the ball. Breathe. Focus. Relax. I hit the putt. Immediately, I closed my eyes hoping for that satisfying clicking sound of the ball hitting the bottom of the cup, but instead all I heard is aww. That disappointing aww, that one uses to express sympathy. My golf team didn’t make it past the regional qualifier round. My missed putt ended the season early. Later on that night, all I could do was replay the putt in my head. That putt haunted me for months. For a while, I couldn’t hold a golf club with confidence. My heart was not in it anymore. Then that new year before the beginning of the new season, I decided enough was enough. It was time for a change. It was time to stop wallowing and continue on with my life. Since that putt, I had decided to make myself a victim. What happened in the past is permeant. The only thing I can change is the future. That putt was a defining moment in my life. Golf taught me to accept my bad shots for what they are, mistakes. I realized everyone makes mistakes, but how you cope with them what makes us individuals. What separates golf professionals from ammeters is how well they can recover. Every round of golf I play, I expect mistakes to happen, but I what can control is their severity. Similar to golf, life is full of uncontrollable factors. The best action I can do is prepare and find solutions quickly. Don’t wallow in a bad shot, learn from it and move on. I approached my last season as a high school golfer with this attitude. Immediately, I noticed an improvement not only on the course, but socially and academically. I became more compassionate towards my friends as we worked through our differences. I never expected perfection from anyone. Like last season, I had another winning putt to make for our team to advance. This time college coaches were watching and more was on the line. But this time was different, I had confidence in myself. I stepped to the putt without hesitation. Tapped my putter against the ball, and like soothing music relaxes the ears, I heard the ball land at the bottom of the cup. My team embraced me as we made school history in qualifying for the State Championship. Golf will always be a metaphor for life for me.

Note: I am not really sure how to end it. Any other suggestions? Thanks in Advance!

And the Winner is…

From reading your comments, it seems everyone has suggested that I choose the topic golf for my This I Believe speech. After completing the six word memoir in class Friday, I, myself am leaning towards golf as well. I feel that golf is sport most people only know the basics of if anything at all. With this assignment, I want to draw connections between golf and life. I plan to expose the public to how golf can be used as a metaphor for life. For anecdotes, I was thinking of describing all the thoughts that go into a golf swing. This I can effectively portray the complexity of the sport. Golf is learning about how to accept your terrible shots and continue on. Similar to life, if you decide to wallow in a mistake, can you ever effectively live on?

For my civics blogs, I plan to analyze polls and discuss the relationship between citizens and their government. As a political science major, I  cannot wait to dive into these discussions and learn more about how society functions on an institution level.  Passion blog wise, I could not settle on either countdowns or movies, so i decided to combine them under the topic of entrainment. This means I might write about my top 10 childhood movies or tv shows. I cannot wait to start discussing more this semester. See y’all soon!

Did I make a good choice? What are some things I could add to this speech?

Operation: Brainstorm

Welcome back everyone! I hope you all enjoyed you all’s break. As much as I missed home, it feels great to be back here, at Penn State. As you all know, within days, professors reviewed their syllabi and quickly began to revert to their old norms. We were given assignments and maybe even we began to worry about certain classes. But with all this said, its nice to brainstorm our ideas here before lunging into the assignments “head first”.

This I Believe

When I first heard about this assignment, I felt as though my mind went blank. I did not not have the slightest idea on where to start. Although, after completing several activities in class, I found myself constantly reflecting on my family. My parents taught me almost everything I know and shaped who I am today. I could define them as a credo, but I am still trying to figure out what facet I want to focus on. Another idea for this assignment could be surround my philosophy about golf. Golf harbors not only physical capabilities, but also mentally. I discovered that if your heart is not completely in the next shot, the results reveal the truth. Golf is about accepting your mistakes and how you recover from them. In fact, it is quite similar to life. It is best to not wallow in times of sorrow, but instead grow from it.

Passion Blogs

Last semester, my passion blogs revolved around film. With the Oscars coming up in February, I want to remain on this topic. After all, it is my passion (no pun intended).  There are always new movies coming out, so my topic will be trendy. I am also obsessed with countdowns. Consequently, this semester, my topic could be about countdowns on anything. For example, it could top 10 childhood toys we all miss or 10 things we all miss about being home. These could be easy for the audience to relate and comment their opinions.

Civic Issue Blogs

As a new category this year to our blogs, I like how these assignments force us to stay current on world events. As a political science major, I, of course, could not stray away from the category of politics. I will most likely focus on new government policies as well as proposed ones. Another area of politics I would want to target would be political opinion. How do the people feel about what is going on in the world? Are they comfortable with their government? This will not only be centered around American politics, but also internationally.

What do think? What do you prefer to see me do? Thanks in advance for your comments!
