Hello everyone,
If you are looking for a good New Year’s resolution that you, your staff and residents can work on together, we’ve got an idea for you! Turn OFF the televisions for an hour each afternoon and turn ON some music and dance! Research has repeatedly shown that music is beneficial for people at all levels of cognitive function (even those with moderate to severe dementia), and yet we often limit playing music to formal activity times or parties. What about turning it on before lunch and dinner and inviting everyone to get up and dance, including staff?
Television can drone on in the background and doesn’t encourage people to get up and move. Try setting a timer each day to remind yourself to shut off the TV and turn on some music or play a game. You may be surprised at the smiles and positive energy this simple action can generate. Let us know how it goes!
We wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy New Year!!!
