Health Promotion and Wellness, a unit of Penn State Student Affairs, is currently accepting applications for HealthWorks, a peer outreach and education program designed to advocate health among students at University Park. Applications for the 2019-20 academic year are currently being accepted through Feb. 1.HealthWorks offers two unique opportunities for students with an interest in health and wellness to get involved on campus. These opportunities include facilitating one-on-one wellness services to peers and outreach and promotion through workshops and other initiatives. During the application process interested students will have the option to prioritize which opportunity they are most interested in.

Penn State’s Student Programming Association Lectures Committee has announced a free lecture by David Hogg, one of the co-founders of March For Our Lives, a youth-led, gun violence prevention movement, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, in the HUB-Robeson Center’s Heritage Hall on the University Park campus.The lecture is free for all students with a valid Penn State University Park Student Photo ID and is funded by the student-initiated fee. Since 1986, hospitals and other health care organizations in the Southeast Michigan (Detroit-Ann Arbor-Flint) area have provided paid summer internships in health administration and health policy to rising undergraduate juniors and seniors interested in eliminating racial health inequalities. These internships are part of the University of Michigan’s Summer Enrichment Program in Health Management & Policy (UM SEP).UM SEP provides students an opportunity to learn from administrators and policy makers in the health care field, under their direct supervision. In its 33rd consecutive year, the program now has over 650 alumni, with notable positions in hospital administration, government, policy, consulting, higher education, and research. Our program evaluations are consistently in the 95th percentile and higher. We are confident that through this experiential program, students will become familiar with health management and policy and consider it as a career option. The Student Engagement Network Grant Program is accepting applications for Spring 2019! The SEN will be awarding grants of up to $3,000 to support student engagement experiences. Examples include financial support for unpaid internships or research opportunities, living expenses, travel costs, and conference fees. Grant funding can also be used to compensate a student working fewer hours in order to be involved in a student club or organization on campus. Undergraduate students are now able to apply for the 2019 Erickson Discovery Grants, with applications due in January instead of February.Each year dozens of undergraduate students from all campuses are selected to receive a $3,500 grant in support of student engagement in original research, scholarship and creative work under the supervision of a faculty member. Have you taken an ethical stand or faced an ethical challenge? The Rock Ethics Institute is proud to announce that nominations are now open for the 2018 Stand Up Awards at Penn State. This award honors Penn State undergraduate students who have demonstrated courage, fortitude, and ethical leadership by taking a stand for a person, cause, or belief. Award winners receive a monetary prize and are honored at the Stand Up ceremony in the Spring semester. Any faculty, staff, student, or community member can nominate a Penn State undergraduate student for the award. Undergraduate students from all Penn State campuses are eligible. The deadline for nominations is January 25.

Edith Pitt Chace Award, Nomination deadline: January 30, 2019-The Edith Pitt Chace Award recognizes an outstanding student leader and scholar. The recipient of this award will receive a $1,500 scholarship, which will be applied toward tuition during the next academic year.
Student Service Award Nomination deadline: January 30, 2019–The Student Service Award recognizes service by a student to HHD, to Penn State, and to the community. The recipient of this award will receive a lifetime membership to the Penn State Alumni Association.
Faculty Appreciation Award Nomination deadline: January 30, 2019–The Faculty Appreciation Award honors a faculty member who actively promotes relationships among students, faculty and staff members, and alumni above and beyond the demands of his/her job.

The Global Health Minor is a competitive minor, open to any Penn State student who is enrolled at the University Park campus and who has declared a major field of study. During your work in the Global Health Minor, you will complete a five -week supervised fieldwork experience in Ecuador, South Africa, or Tanzania. This experience, along with course work, will help you develop the capacity to think, talk, and write critically about global health issues and challenges and help you prepare for occupations and graduate programs that demand global thinking, understanding and experience.
Advising:After attending an information session, students who are interested in applying for the Global Health Minor should schedule an advising appointment to meet with the Global Health Minor program director, Dr. Dana Naughton. Thirty-minute advising sessions may be arranged by contacting the staff of the Department of Biobehavioral Health at 814-863-7256. The Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) Emerging Creatives Student Summits bring together students who have an interest in the arts, crossing disciplinary boundaries, and developing collaborative projects. Each year, 80-100 undergraduate and graduate students attend the summit from a2ru partner universities like Penn State Summits have a strong project-based component with activities such as panel discussions with special guests, keynote speakers, site visits or field trips, performances and exhibitions, networking opportunities, and skill-building experiences throughout to collaboratively solve challenges with projects that integrate the arts and design with other disciplines to produce new knowledge; as part of a process of systematic questioning and inquiry; as part of creative activity and scholarship; as a mode of creative activity and scholarship; and in the exploration and discovery of processes, information, applications, ideas or performances. This year’s theme is Food and Place. Food is the common language of life. Across the world, people use it to establish and maintain relationships and to celebrate important events. Food also frequently takes on a symbolic dimension in culture, representing everything from love to social status. Differing approaches to its production and consumption profoundly affect our economic systems, public health, and climate. Our connection to food is multi-faceted, inspiring a wide range of creative works. This summit will be hosted by James Madison University. Nittany AI Challenge: For the second year in a row, the EdTech Network is offering teams of students, faculty, and staff the chance to compete for grants totaling $50,000. Teams will be challenged to use the artificial intelligence (AI) platform(s) of their choosing to develop and present AI-based solutions that improve the student experience at Penn State, solve real problems that the University is facing, and/or generate innovative startup ideas. The Amgen Scholars Program continues to offer undergraduates the opportunity to collaborate with faculty at top institutions on cutting-edge scientific research at ten renowned U.S. host institutions. Applications for the 2018 U.S. Amgen Scholars Program are now online. Note that applicants do not need to currently attend one of the host institutions to participate. In fact, Amgen Scholars have represented over 680 colleges and universities to date. Applications close February 1(February 15 for the California Institute of Technology).
