Towpath and Mule

The towpath was path along what used to be the Hollidaysburg Mainline Canal, where mules were used to help pull the boats along the canal when there was no current.

A “hoggee” was  the term used to describe the men who would tend to the mules. Together, they would guide the boats into the locks which allowed the boats to travel up hill via inclineed planes. If a team of mules were to be pulling multiple boats, this would be called “hoodledashing.”
