Not your mother’s Open House…or even your sister’s for that matter!

In the 12 years that the Libraries have been having an Open House, there have been many changes. From a twice-a-year event (can you imagine?!) to pirate themes (Arrr!) to attendance as large as 5,000 students one year (Wow!), one constant is that the Open House is always changing. Likewise, we have some important changes for this year we’d like you to know about, so please read on.

RCR holds annual awards event

The Reference, Collections and Research Department held its annual awards luncheon on June 19. Associate Dean Lisa German hosted the event which honored the following employees who achieved service milestones.

  • 5 years: Mary Derstein, Jackie Dillon-Fast, Lev Tmanov (PT), Jacqueleen Weaver (PT)
  • 10 years: Stephen Woods, Michael Wright
  • 15 years: Tim AuMan, Ann Thompson

Continuity planning Q&A sessions

We will be holding Question and Answer sessions on the Continuity Planning Process in Mann Assembly Room on the following days:

  • August 9, 1-2:30pm
  • August 26, 1:30-3pm
  • September 9, 1:30-3pm
  • September 23, 1:30-3pm
  • October 7, 1:30-3pm
  • October 23, 9-10:30pm.

For the employees who will be creating and completing continuity plans for their departments, Pam Soule and I will be available to answer any questions they may have and to provide any assistance necessary.

 

Cleanup Day is coming

Library Cleanup Day is right around the corner! The event will take place on August 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Mann Assembly Room. Items may be brought down throughout the day. Feel free to drop and shop! Branch libraries may send their materials up to two week in advance by contacting Verne Neff at van1@psu.edu and Earl Houser at ejh10@psu.edu .

Ever consider donating scrap paper? Any scraps without sensitive information are welcome. One man’s trash is another’s treasure! While you’re at it, why not clean up your virtual space by deleting old files! As the libraries move towards a greener tomorrow, use this opportunity to clean out and recycle unwanted items. Participation in the cleanup is voluntary, but encouraged. Nearly all remaining items at the end of the day will be reused or recycled by university salvage.

Upcoming events

August 7: Faust Travel Award Winner, Emily Van Dette, and Huck Travel Award Winner, Kristine Thompson, will talk about their research projects in the Mann Assembly Room  at 1:00 P.M. Emily Van Dette will be talking about her research project, “Six Scribbling Women and the Politics of Literary Reputation.” Van Dette received her Ph.D from Penn State and  is on the faculty at the State University of New York at Fredonia. She will be using the Fred Lewis Pattee papers as well as other related collections from the Special Collections Library.

Kristine Thompson of Louisiana State University is researching photographic representations of death and mourning, from the 19th century to the present day. She is using the Jay Ruby Collection and other related materials from our collections. Light refreshments (lemonade and cookies) will be served.

August 20: Annual Picnic
Please join us for the 23rd Annual University Libraries’ Faculty/Staff Family Picnic, from 5:00 p.m. – sunset, in Sunset Park, Pavilions #1 and #2 (Buffet dinner service to begin at 5:30 p.m.)
MENU: Hamburgers & Hot Dogs with rolls, potato salad, grilled vegetables, freshly cut fruits, and desserts

September 5: UPLEA Arts Fest

11am-3pm, in the Mann Assembly Room.

September 16: The University Libraries will host Megan Oakleaf of Syracuse University  for a visit focused on library assessment. Dr. Oakleaf will help us learn more about assessing library services so that we can document the value that we provide to our users. More details of her visit will be forthcoming.
