Organic Foods; Are they worth is?

Many people believe that eating organically is the right way to go. At times it can be extremely expensive and not worth it at all. As a consumer of the organic food industry it has been a complete waste of money, to brain wash people to spend more money. Many products are reportedly more expensive, than other produce, such as mesclun a type of vegetable was 23% more costly.  Not all “Conventional” produce shows traces of pesticides. An article written by  The Huffington Post said that not all avocados had pesticides in them, only about 1% of them did. Meaning that people are only buying these product because they believe that organic foods have better health benefits, which is not true. Seafood is impossible to track or regulate if it has been contaminated with pesticides. From the same  The Huffington Post article it states . As we speak there are currently new rules in place to try to regulate what “Organic;” is by the USDA ” With that being said there is no such thing as organic seafood so be mindful, when a store trying to sell you that.

On the other hand organic foods are a great way to stay healthy and offer great health benefits. Conventional  foods have increased the amount obesity in the community. Stated in Organic Facts in some cases organic milk may be more beneficial and may be packed with more vitamins and minerals. Organic foods do have benefits, and are sometimes packed with more nutrients.

There are several misconceptions of organic foods such as people may think that food that has labels such as “pesticide free”, just because these labels say this does not mean they are not used. Organic just means that the pesticides use to grow these product ,just come from natural sources.

I agree that buying organic food is a waste of money because there is no real proof how much healthier or better for you it is. A CNN article debates this topic arguing that there are no studies stating that organic foods hold more nutritional value. As to whether or not consuming organic foods is better for the environment, again, there are no current studies that say organically grown food is better than conventional food. Although some organic products and brands are tasty, most nutritional experts advise to eat in moderation and balance regardless if it is organic or not.

I remember hearing about all the buzz about organic food when it became extremely popular. I thought why waste money on food that just has the word organic in front of it. My boyfriend always shops at a Whole Foods store and while he has a great job, I can’t seem to figure out why he spends so much money it. I feel like once someone hears the word organic they automatically think healthy and losing weight. A lot of my friends will eat organic food and I am totally supportive, you do you. But I have never seen the whole deal about why it is so good for you. I found this article that will probably give you a good laugh but also gives you great examples on why organic food isnt all that great. http://gawker.com/the-bullshit-hypocrisy-of-all-natural-foods-1702686054

When the organic food trend started to become more popular, I assumed it would be healthier than conventionally grown products that were being sold in the supermarket. Organic produce is marketed as not using artificial pesticides or GMOs to grow and protect crops. When I learned this, my initial thought was that the conventional products I was once buying had unhealthy or potentially harmful substances on or within them. Then I realized that the FDA would never allow contaminated food to be sold across the United States. Because of this thought, I never really jumped on the bandwagon of the organic food movement. I would occasionally purchase organic items if they happened to look fresher at the time I was in the store. What it comes down to is that organically farmed produce many not (necessarily) be healthier for people, but it definitely has positive impacts for the environment. Here’s a link to an article that debates whether or not organic foods are safer and/or more nutritious than conventionally farmed produce. —-> http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/organic-food/art-20043880?pg=2

As someone who tries to eat relatively healthy, I feel as though I really relate to this post. Given that I am a poor college student, I am always trying to save money. Buying organic foods at the store simply isn’t an option for me. with some things, such as fruits and veggies, I feel as the organic label is just a ploy to get people to pay more. There truly is no difference in taste in my opinion. However, with more processed products such as sauce or other things, I do see some real benefits. This articles gives a list of food that are worth the extra cost and foods that just flat out aren’t worth it- http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/organic-food-is-natural-worth-the-extra-cost#1. Hope this helps.

I never really considered seafood when I thought of organic foods. It’s true that since it’s coming from the sea then it isn’t really the most important nor logical thing to be thinking about if it’s organic or not. When I think of organic foods verse nonorganic I mostly think about pesticides! A lot of the times my mom buys organic fruit and I guess bread. I would like to look more into what foods are more important to buy organically. Maybe there are certain foods that would be beneficial to eat organically but others do not matter so much- so you could spend money smartly. It is a good thing to be skeptical of the things we hear- we could be wasting a lot of money if we are not critical thinkers about what we believe/hear!
