Overview

We ask that students prepare a lightning talk to present their research.

What is a lightning talk?
A lightning talk is a short presentation that highlights a research project. For the symposium students should prepare 4 Power Point slides that will be presented in person with a 2 minute time limit. The first slide will serve as a transition. Talks should focus on providing short concise statements on a research question(s) and its importance, methods, and results/preliminary results. Following a group of student talks, we will have a short question/answer session and then move to the next block of student lightning talks.

Suggested lightning talk organization:

  • Slide 1: Your name, department, advisor(s) & colleagues, project title
  • Slide 2: Research question & importance of your research
  • Slide 3: Method(s) you are using to answer your research question
  • Slide 4: Results. This might be one key figure that you explain with a clear statement of your findings. If you don’t have results yet, you can mention what you anticipate to find or learn, what problems you encountered and how you addressing them, or why this research is interesting to you.

Actions for students

  1. RSVP to the event by October 30th by completing the form emailed to you. If you are attending you will provide a title for your presentation.
  2. Upload your lightning talk no later than November 9th to the link emailed to you.
