12×12: “My Next Life” Recap

This episode of Grey’s Anatomy was more of a “filler” episode, but I thought it was still a really good one. The episode was used as a way to show how far Meredith has come in the 10 years she’s been working at the hospital. The first patient she ever treated, Katie, is readmitted to Grey Sloan due to seizures. Her previous injury was due to unexplained seizures, and Derek was the doctor on her case. Katie is shocked that they still let Meredith be a doctor, since she says that she was a mess that day. Amelia is now her doctor, and they find out that she’s been having seizures again due to a huge aneurism, which she has to clip. Katie asks Amelia if she’s as good as her brother was, and she replies that she is but we know that she’s always had insecurities when it comes to her brother.

Meanwhile, Meredith is working on another case with a woman who can’t stop bleeding from an injury. They’re supposed to put pressure on it and it’ll stop on its own, but they ended up having to operate. As Meredith and Riggs rush with the patient towards an OR, she makes eye contact with Katie, who now sees that Meredith is actually a good doctor. Amelia is able to clip the aneurism successfully, and we can see that she’s feeling confident as she deals with some of her previous insecurities. Meredith’s patient, however, didn’t make it, which is really sad since she was finally going to reunite with her long-lost son. He arrives at the hospital right after she died and we all can’t help but feel really bad for them.

Richard, Maggie, DeLuca, and Arizona had a really funny dynamic on this episode. DeLuca just found out from Maggie that Richard is her father, and he is mortified since he told him last week that his girlfriend was a “wildcat.” Richard is not happy with DeLuca, and the situation is only made worse when Arizona jokingly comments during surgery that DeLuca and his mystery girlfriend are always having sex and that she must be wild. DeLuca gets extremely embarrassed and Richard keeps glaring at him while Arizona obliviously keeps talking. Richard also gets more than he bargained for when he asks Arizona about the dates she’s been going on and she reveals a little too much information, but there is a sweet moment between them when Arizona thanks him for helping her get out there and date again after she got divorced from Callie.

We finally found out what happened between Riggs and Hunt, and it seems that Hunt is mad at Riggs because he blames him for his sister’s death. Apparently Owen’s sister Meg got on a helicopter to go treat her patient during a storm, and the helicopter crashed. Owen is mad that Riggs didn’t take Meg’s place. Honestly, I don’t think Owen should blame Riggs for Meg’s death, since Riggs knew that Meg would never accept staying there and leaving her patient.

Overall, this episode was really good and it felt like many of the characters are starting to move forward. The flashback scene with Derek saying his trademark “It’s a beautiful day to save lives” was so bittersweet but also helped us fans get some closure.

  1. I’ve never seen an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, but a testament to a good show is that the filler episodes are still enjoyable. It’s a pet peeve of mine to see filler that is completely unwatchable or just a rehash of a previous episode.
I might start watching this show now. It seems like intelligent, well thought out TV and that’s hard to come by in today’s world.

It has been a while since I have watched an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, but I can definitely feel the character of the show captured in your posts. Is it not crazy that the producers kill off so many patients so frequently. The main characters typically stick around for a while, but they can still attach viewers to characters even if they only appear in one episode, only to rip the life of that character away. A prime example of this was the mother in this episode that died, even as viewers were sitting on the edge of their seats hoping that she may be reunited to her son. Anyway, great overall summary and I can’t stress enough that I can really feel the character of the show expressed in this post.
