Do women actually live longer than men… ?

For years I always remembered hearing, “oh yea, did you know women live longer than men?” I always answered back, “oh really?” unconvincingly, and never really thought that your gender could determine your death rate. Until now, have I found this theory to be very true, according to studies done by Dr. Marianne Legato, MD.

Females are less likely to be daredevils. Unintentional injuries are the third leading cause of death among men, and the sixth leading cause of death among women. This is because the frontal lobes of the brain, which deal with responsibility and risk-taking, develop much more slowly in males than in females. To sum this up, women are less likely to make dumb decisions that can lead to injury.

Heart disease has less of an effect on women than it does on men. Even though heart disease is the number one killer for both men and women, men are most likely to develop the disease and die from it in their early 30’s and 40’s. Women are more likely to get the disease 10 years after men do, due to women having to go through menopause.

Women and their social life. It’s been scientifically proven that it’s extremely healthy for an individual to be surrounded by a really close group of friends. People with these close groups of friends have a 50% lower chance of dying than those who chose not to surround themselves with other people. Women are more likely to vent their emotions and thoughts with their friends, while men tend to bottle up that emotion. This can cause more stress in a man’s life.

Last but not least, women just take better care of themselves. Statistically speaking, men are more likely to skip out on doctor appointments and cholesterol testing than women are. Women tend to be more organized and keep up with the daily regimens that will keep them healthy.

For any of my fellow male classmates that are reading this, please do not let this blog startle you. I’m sure you are all living very healthy lives, so keep it up ya know 🙂

Coming from a male perspective and looking at all the information, it does seem that women tend to live longer hypothetically but there have been men that outlast women all the time. I guess it just deals with whether or not you take care of yourself and maintain a health life. But overall great information and very interesting.

I would definitely have to agree with this! It is a question we all think about – how can gender determine your life – but it’s something we kind of think about for a minute and then move on. These reasons make a lot of sense. Good idea!

I’ve definitely thought about this before and read some things on it, I’ve never heard of the heart disease or social life part so I found that interesting. I didn’t know social lives played a role is living longer! Cool study!
