Negotiation Immersion

By Varun Tiwari, MBA Class of 2016

The second year of the MBA program, I feel, is more fun than the first year of the program. The start of the year is exciting as we get to reunite with our classmates, whom we did not see during the summer internship. We also get to meet a bunch of new program candidates. The classes in the second year are more focused towards each student’s area of interest so the courses are more interesting.

From CA to PA for MBA

By Karina Santos, MBA Class of 2017

Nine days, eight hours, and 24 minutes. That’s how long it took for me to relocate my family from Los Angeles, CA to State College, PA during the peak of summer 2015. Having lived within a 30 mile radius of my high school in Los Angeles my entire life, the journey was particularly momentous for me. As my husband packed our life in a black SUV that felt like we were playing a real life version of Tetris, I couldn’t help but wonder if I had made a mistake. Space saver bags stacked five high filled our car- that before that moment felt big enough for our small family of three. As the last bag went in the car, the feeling of anticipation quickly began filling my body manifesting by way of shivers Continue reading

Networking – A Subtle Art

By Srimaan Gurusamy, MBA Class of 2017

I am an international student who came to the Smeal College of Business to explore new opportunities and get a broader view of the world. When I entered the MBA world, I got introduced to a new term. This term resounded in conversations with almost everyone I met. It seemed to be the predominant buzz word and I realized that it is very important for anyone who wants to pursue an MBA in the United States or elsewhere. And all this build up is for the word “NETWORKING.”

Takeaways from my Summer Internship

By Rahul Ramteke, MBA Class of 2016

It’s really hard to believe that we are second years now. Most of us spent the past summer interning at different companies. I spent my summer interning at AccuWeather, Inc. as a Product Management Graduate Intern in their Digital Media Department and focused primarily on setting up the end-to-end processes for partner product implementations. Below are the key takeaways that I would like to share from my internship at AccuWeather. Continue reading

Managing the MBA Stress

By Neha Bareja, MBA Class of 2015

Overwhelmed doesn’t come anywhere close to explaining the state I was in during the first few weeks of the full time MBA program. The hoard of demands from family and school left me with very little time for anything else, including sleep. Supposedly, I lied to myself that I could actually do it all. Sure enough, I started dropping some balls – forgetting to respond to phone calls from my family back in India, skipping meals, and one day I even microwaved watermelon by mistake!!

What to expect from MBA in the two years?

By Nahom Woldemariam, MBA Class of 2015

Most incoming students might be probing what MBA School is like? I asked the same question roughly two years ago. Here is my MBA experience and hopefully you find this helpful.

–       Know what you want to achieve out of MBA School. You won’t have a lot of flexibility in the first 3 modules in the courses you select, but you will have 5 modules to take courses that interest and challenge you. Don’t settle for the “easy A” courses; challenge yourself by taking difficult courses in areas you are focusing on, and also on courses that will help you in the future even if those courses aren’t within your concentration. E.g. you may not concentrate in finance, but taking financial valuation course will definitely help you in whatever concentration you have. Continue reading

Smeal MBA: A small community with access to a giant university.

By Scott Robbins, MBA Class of 2015

One of the first things prospective students notice on their visit to campus is that the Smeal MBA program a very small community. Class sizes around 80 people allow students to build a personal relationship with their peers and faculty, have one-on-one interactions with corporate recruiters, and have ample opportunity for leadership positions in the nine MBA student associations. Why more MBA students need to participate in case competitions

Case PhotoBy Nahom Woldemariam, MBA Class of 2015

I never imagined myself in taking part in case competitions. I was fearful in participating for two reasons. Firstly, I had a wrong perception about the judges. I thought they would just grill us in the Q&A section of the case completion. Continue reading
