Limited Submission: DE‐FOA‐0001956 DOE EERE: Machine Learning for Geothermal Energy

All current limited submission opportunities can be viewed at research.psu.edu/limitedsubs.

The Office of the Vice President for Research announces the launch of the DE‐FOA‐0001956 DOE EERE: Machine Learning for Geothermal Energy competition. The internal submission deadline is Friday, August 3, 2018.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Geothermal Technology Office (GTO) Machine Learning for Geothermal Energy funding opportunity announcement (FOA) supports projects that will develop new analytical tools for finding and developing geothermal resources and establish the practice of machine learning in geothermal operations. The rapidly advancing field of Machine Learning (ML) offers substantial opportunities for technology advancement and cost reduction throughout the geothermal project lifecycle, from resource exploration to power plant operations.

Under this funding opportunity, GTO is interested in two topic areas:

  • Topic 1: Machine Learning for Geothermal Exploration – GTO seeks projects that advance geothermal exploration through the application of machine learning techniques to geological, geophysical, geochemical, borehole, and other relevant datasets. Of particular interest to GTO are projects that will identify data acquisition targets and build community datasets for future work.
  • Topic 2: Advanced Analytics for Efficiency and Automation in Geothermal Operations – GTO seeks projects that apply advanced analytics to power plant and other operator datasets, with the goal of improving operations and resource management.

Limited Submission: NSF Major Research Instrumentation Program

All current limited submission opportunities can be viewed at research.psu.edu/limitedsubs.

The Office of the Vice President for Research announces the launch of the 2018/19 NSF Major Research Instrumentation Program competition. The internal notice of intent deadline (REQUIRED) is Tuesday, August 7, 2018.

The Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training in our nation’s institutions of higher education and not-for-profit scientific/engineering research organizations. An MRI award supports the acquisition or development of a multi-user research instrument that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs.

Call for Proposals: Universities Research Association’s Visiting Scholars Program

The Universities Research Association (URS) has issued an Announcement of Opportunity for the fall 2018 awards cycle under the URA Visiting Scholars Program. Proposals for this cycle are due Monday, August 27, 2018, and awards are anticipated to be announced at the end of September.

Applications must be submitted on-line at the URA Visiting Scholars Program website. To register, please go to the VSP website.

These awards are restricted. Individual proposals may be submitted by researchers who are faculty, postdocs, or graduate students at URA member universities. Researchers are defined as graduate students, postdocs, or faculty doing research in areas such as high energy physics experiments, astrophysics, theory, accelerator physics, materials science, computer science, engineering, and accelerator R&D, related to the Fermilab mission. Applicants must be employed by or, in the case of graduate students, enrolled at URA member institutions during the course of the award.
