Below is the registration form for the Fall 2016 Berks PMI Sessions. Note that space is limited to only 30 registrants per session, but that we try to strike a balance between interested school buildings and districts. You will receive confirmation of your status within a week of your submission.
Participants will be provided:
- High-quality math-focused professional development
- Lunch and coffee on-site
- 6 Act 48 credits
- Free parking
There is no charge for these sessions. Funding is provided by the Penn State Math Department and Eberly College of Science.
We cannot provide participants with stipends, college credits, lodging, or travel reimbursement. Our 10-day summer workshops do offer stipends, lodging,and travel reimbursement, though not college credit.
The sessions will have the following content. Sessions are designed to be independent of one another, and so you do not need to participate in earlier sessions to engage in later sessions. If you sign up for one, and want to later add another, you can
- Number and Operation 1 (Saturday, 10/29) focuses on the interplay between addition and subtraction and how that leads to the arithmetic of negative numbers. We also discuss problem solving in mathematics as a whole and how the topics of early grades progress into those of later grades. (Recommended for teachers for grades K-3).
- Number and Operation 2 (Saturday, 11/19) focuses on the interplay between multiplication and division and how that leads to the arithmetic of fractions. We also discuss problem solving in mathematics as a whole, and several of the Standards for Mathematical Practice. (Recommended for teachers for grades 2-5)
- Number and Operation 3 (Saturday, 12/3) focuses on division and the arithmetic of fractions. We also discuss modes of understanding in mathematics, and several of the Standards for Mathematical Practice. (Recommended for teachers for grades 4-6)
