The Pennsylvania Mathematics Initiative is preparing short workshops to be done for individual school districts and Intermediate Units in Pennsylvania. If you are interested, contact Andrew Baxter for more information.
Workshops available
Workshops on other topics may be developed by request. Workshops are curriculum-neutral.
- One Problem, Many Solutions
- Mathematics is filled with problems that allow for multiple paths to solution. We solve such problems first-hand, then compare the different approaches taken.
- Appropriate for all grades K-12.
- Numbers and Operation
- A series of one-day workshops focusing on the following topics.
- 1: Addition, Subtraction, and Signed Numbers
- 2: Multiplication and Division
- 3: Fractions
- A series of one-day workshops focusing on the following topics.
- Geometry: Language Made Precise
- We explore geometry through the elementary grades and how it connects to secondary grades. We also examine how language plays a significant role in developing geometric reasoning skills.
- Designed for K-5, but may be appropriate for middle and secondary grades as well.
- Full version takes five 90-minute sessions, but abbreviated versions are possible.
- Geometry: The Transformational Approach
- The Common Core Standards encourage a viewpoint on geometry based on transformations (reflections, rotations, and translations), starting in the elementary grades and continuing into the secondary grades. This is an unfamiliar approach to many, and so we discuss the basics as well as the big picture.
- Designed for K-5, but may be appropriate for middle and secondary grades as well.
- Full version takes five 90-minute sessions, but abbreviated versions are possible.
