Poster Presentations – Designing Effective Posters

Fred Stoss from SUNY Buffalo has created a web site that contains wonderful advice about how to create good poster presentations. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who is creating poster presentations.

ALA Poster sessions

Dear colleagues,

Share your best ideas and work with the national library community by presenting a poster session at the 2013 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago!

Start your application process now at http://ala13.ala.org/how-to-submit-a-poster-session. Note that the submission process has changed. You must create a username and password for the site before you submit your application, you must choose to submit a poster session proposal after you log-in, and you will receive a confirmation e-mail after you have completed your submission.

The deadline for submission of 2013 ALA Annual Conference poster session proposals is January 18.

The poster session committee encourages submissions from all types of libraries and on any topic relevant to librarianship. Submissions may include a description of an innovative library program; an analysis of a solution to a problem; a report of a research study; or any other presentation that would benefit the larger library community.

Poster session participants place materials such as pictures, data, graphs, diagrams and narrative text on boards that are usually 4 x 8 feet. During their assigned 11Ž2 hour time periods, participants informally discuss their presentations with conference attendees. Titles/abstracts from previous years, and pictures of sample posters, are available at the old poster session website: http://www.lib.jmu.edu/org/ala (note that this site is only serving as an archive for previous Annual Conference poster sessions – for information on this year’s posters, go to: http://ala13.ala.org/poster-sessions).

The deadline for submitting an application is January 18, 2013. Applicants will be notified in March, prior to the early bird registration deadline, whether their submission has been accepted for presentation at the conference. The 2013 ALA Annual Poster Sessions will be held June 29 and 30, 2013 (the Saturday and Sunday of the conference), at the McCormick Place convention center in Chicago.

Questions about poster session presentations and submissions may be directed to:

ACRL 2013 Conference Call for Poster Proposals

ACRL 2013 Conference Call for Poster Proposals

Got an innovative library-based project, best practices to solve a problem, or unique research findings? Consider sharing them in a poster session! Posters should be an eye-catching visual representation of a topic, including graphics, tables, charts, text, and images. Presenters can communicate additional details via online handouts. Presenters share their ideas with colleagues as attendees circulate during one hour time blocks in the poster session area, located in the exhibits hall. Since space is limited at a poster session, a maximum of two presenters per poster at any one time is recommended. The Poster Session Committee looks for topics that will engage attendees during repeated presentations.

Potential topics can be seen in the program tags that are included on the proposal instructions page (link below). Poster topics from underrepresented categories are of particular interest.  Here are some examples:

* cataloging & technical services
* collections projects
* preservation projects
* digitization
* data management and services

Use the application form to sell your idea in a short, dynamic summary and provide a more complete discussion of the contents for the reviewers.  Please plan to submit an electronic version of your poster so that it can be posted online with conference handouts. Submissions are due by November 9, 2012.

Questions should be directed to Margot Conahan at mconahan@ala.org or call (312) 280-2522.

PA Library Association Conference Poster Sessions

REMINDER:  There is one week left to submit a poster session proposal for the PaLA Conference in Gettysburg.  See below for more information and details on the event.

The 2012 PaLA Conference Planning Committee invites you to share some of your winning library strategies or programs by presenting a poster session at the PALA Annual Conference, PA Libraries: Leading the Charge.  The conference will  take place September 30 –  October 3, 2012 at the Gateway Gettysburg complex in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

What is a poster session?  It is an opportunity, set aside during the conference, when author- librarians, students, staff or others participating in the professional conference can present an idea, the outcomes of a completed project, or research results to an audience of their peers. The tone is casual and the mode is highly interactive.  The object is to gather feedback and to make connections with others interested in the same subject. This is a forum for library professionals from across the state to share their successful ideas or innovations with colleagues.

Poster sessions are displayed on poster boards (4 ft x 6ft). Pictures, graphs, data and text are used to illustrate the presentation.   An effective poster presentation highlights, with visual display, the main points or components of your topic; the presenter fills in the details verbally. Poster Sessions can cover any project or program. They are a great way to share your interesting work without doing a formal presentation.

Because most of the poster sessions will be presented in the exhibit area, conference registration or obtainment of an exhibit pass will be required of all poster session presenters.  This will enable poster session presenters to enter the poster session area and take part in exhibit hall activities.  Poster sessions will take place during the following times:

Monday, 10/1/2012, 12:45 – 1:45 p.m. for all topics except youth services topics, as this session occurs opposite the Carolyn W. Field Luncheon.

Tuesday, 10/2/2011, 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. for all topics.

In addition, if demand warrants, an additional session will take place on Tuesday, October 2, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

We invite you to submit a poster session proposal online via the online proposal form.  For working purposes, or to review the form questions in advance of submission, a PDF of the form is also available for viewing.  Please note that all submissions must be submitted via the online form on or before May 31, 2012.

Thank you, we look forward to seeing you at this Gettysburg address!

Leveraging Uncertainty:
Toward a New Generation of Undergraduate Research

In current crises of economic viability, urban decline, environmental degradation, and cultural meaning, we face deep and broad-based concerns, both for personal prospects and larger social contracts. We can be swept along by those changes, or we can use them as opportunities for positive transformation. We know that research must inform our responses to these new conditions. And we know that undergraduate research offers experiences and skills that our students can draw on for successful future study, meaningful work lives, and social engagement. This conference will ask us to consider new models of undergraduate research that create possibilities where others might see peril.

The subthemes for the 2012 CUR National Conference are as follows:

  • Research Transcending Historic Disciplinary Boundaries
  • Sustaining Undergraduate Research in an Era of Fiscal Uncertainty
  • Online Technology in Undergraduate Research: Possibilities, Threats and Challenges
  • The Challenges and Opportunities of Undergraduate Research in a Broad Global Context
  • Other non-theme proposals are also welcome
