With week 2 officially in the books, this is all starting to seem more achievable, but also more impossible. The more I get into practice session, and actually recruiting participants, the more little details I had not considered make it to the surface. The practice sessions are going well! I have practiced explaining the tasks in English and Spanish. The Spanish definitely needs more work but I am getting close. I had my parents complete the tasks after I explained the instructions to them too, because they love to ask questions. I think I am now prepared for just about any question that could be asked.
I have also had a few people fill out the language history questionnaire! This is so exciting because hopefully they will become my future participants. I have only had native Spanish speakers complete the quiz at this point, so I am not able to start collecting data, as I need a native English speaker as well, but this is a definite step forward. I am nervous to post my recruitment flyer because I do not want to get a ton of people at once, but I also do need participants. I think I need to just jump in and trust I have prepared as much as I could have. So exciting!
Words of the Week: Participants, Questions, Euros
Hi Lily! I love that you asked your parents to help run a practice trial too, and I am sure it’s super helpful since they could ask the same question that your future participants could have. And same here that I am still waiting for native English speakers as my participants but I also think we will hear from others soon as all of our PIRE fellows are helping each other spread the flyer!
Hi Lily,
I feel the anticipation!! It’s so exciting that both of our projects are starting to unfold together 🙂 hopefully we will both get some more participants soon!
Hi Lillian!
I just finished reading your first two blog posts and it sounds like you are making great progress! Coming from someone that knows multiple languages, but can only call themselves fluent in their native language, it is really impressive that you are explaining the tasks in both English and Spanish. I am glad to hear that you are getting more comfortable as you practice this, so keep it up! I definitely think a big hurdle in this process is being able to “jump in” to recruit participants, even if it makes us nervous. Once you do, everything will fall into place. There might be some errors along the way, but this is totally normal, especially in an online format. So, don’t get too nervous!
Good luck with furthering your study!
