Tonight marks the end of our first week in Mexico City, and so far, this has been an amazing experience! This week was focused mainly on travel and settling into our new home for the next eight weeks. We got into the city Sunday evening, and after a full day of travel, we were absolutely exhausted. I believe we were all in bed by 8 that night. However, we were up and ready to go early the next morning and the rest of the week has been full of adventure.

                   Mexico City Students

A couple days this week, we spent time in the lab getting to know the fellow students, our generous hosts, and the space that we would be working in. It was great to become more familiar with the area and people that we will be surrounded by, not to mention the coffee at the café in the University was so good! Overall though, we did not spend overly much time in the lab this week as we were more focused on getting used to its people and learning about the new, exciting environment around us.

Throughout this week, we visited multiple areas around the city, such as Zocalo and the historic district and explored the area around our apartment. There are many different shops and restaurants to visit while we are here!

We also got to experience some of the delicious foods that Mexico has to offer throughout the week. Fun fact, did you know that quesadillas here are fried corn tortillas rather than two soft shell flour tortillas? I certainly didn’t know that before arriving, but I have been very pleasantly surprised. One thing I ate that I was not expecting, though, was grasshoppers. Honestly, I did pick them off when I noticed they were there because I was unprepared that night to try grasshoppers; however, within the next seven weeks I definitely plan to order and try the many exotic foods that Mexico has to offer which are much less common in the United States. My favorite food overall though has definitely been the churros! Altogether, the food has been amazing and I cannot wait to continue to try even more as our journey continues.

En todo, until next time,
