I have had an amazing and exciting second week in Nijmegen! After running participants scattered throughout the week, we have been able to start transcribing the recordings. There are a lot of factors to pay attention to (like code-switching and filled pauses), but after going through a few trials I am becoming more comfortable with the transcriptions. On the days where we do not have participants to run, we are going around campus to recruit potential participants. Even though it can be a little intimidating at times, it is a great way to interact with the university students and effective for finding participants. This weekend, we traveled to Rotterdam and Belgium. We did a day trip to Rotterdam, which was a great city to walk around in, visit markets, and we went to the famous cube houses (or kijk-kubus). On Saturday, we traveled to Antwerp which was filled with nice terraces to soak in the sun and watch people roaming the streets. We stayed overnight in a hotel and traveled to Ghent the next morning. Ghent was also a great walking city with a lot of nice architecture and a river flowing through the city. We spent the day walking around and enjoying the nice weather until we took the train back to Nijmegen. It was a fun and productive week and I am looking forward to the coming week!

I find recruitments intimidating as well. I always get the nerves right before I present, but they actually turn out to be so much fun. What helps me get through the nervousness is reminding myself that these people are never going to see me again. So who cares if I’m annoying them with trying to get them to participate? They won’t remember me a couple of months from now.
Also, good for you for traveling. Those pictures look beautiful! Have so much fun!
