There are a few things I have learned about the research field in these past four weeks. Firstly, there is a lot involved, including a lot of rules to follow. Sometimes, you think that you can do something but realize there can be many roadblocks that force you to take another route. Secondly, issues really just pop up when you do not expect them. I have made programs before, but minimally, and I never realized how finicky they can be. While these are certainly challenging aspects of research, I am excited to get started running participants. My hope is that I can start running some early next week, but it depends on finding people willing and able to participate.
The hope is that everything can go smoothly, but that is a very rare occurrence. I do feel prepared to run subjects now. It is simply a matter of fixing a few minor things and uploading everything or changing the status to running. I feel that this first month of PIRE went by rather quickly as there has been a lot to do in preparation for running, but I am excited for this next month. Having data to analyze will be very exciting and interesting. I am happy to be learning so much from this experience.
Quote of the week: “Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” -African Proverb
You’re absolutely right that it is rare that everything goes smoothly! I really like that quote, it’s an important reminder that we aren’t doing these projects just to see what happens when everything goes perfectly! All the mistakes, problems, and incidents are integral to how we learn! I will try to remember that the next time something goes wrong with my project 🙂 Good luck with running participants!
