Backwards Compatible Everything

There has been new talk of the next generation of video game consoles headed our way. Whether its the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox whatever (720?), there are a few things that we can all expect. For one thing, there’s better graphics, every generation needs better graphics, and for every iteration of HD, Ultra HD, and 4k, it seems to take everyone’s breath away. And that’s fair. There are moments where I’m playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and Spider-man where I’ll just be strolling through the map and the whole scenery absolutely takes my breath away. So, more power to better graphics. Some other things we want include a better frame rate, storage, sometimes even better controllers. I, however, I’m a simple man. There’s only one thing I really want. And that’s backwards compatibility.

Backwards compatibility means being able to play older video games from previous generations on the new console.Sony absolutely needs to bring backwards compatibility to the Play Station 5. I had the Play Station 3 for who knows how many years, and I managed to amass quite a formidable collection of video games to show for it. But when the Play Station 4 came out, all of that went out the window. All my years of collecting, down the drain. And I couldn’t even get a good price on the games I had bought earlier. (Looking at you, Game Stop).

What was probably the most heartbreaking of the lack of backwards compatibility was the fact that my beloved Play Station 3 now sat in the corner of my room, catching dust. Sure, there were an innumerable amount of amazing games I could play on it, but why bother when I have better games on the Play Station 4? It got to the point where it was inconvenient to switch to my Play Station 3 and its small, obsolete controllers, when I had the sleek, fast running PS4. I fear we might be headed for the same situation with the PS5. So please Sony, make the PS5 backwards compatible.

To Bezel or Not to Bezel?

Recently, Samsung unveiled its new line of Galaxy S10s. One of the biggest boasts of the new phone is its bezel-less edge to edge screen. Or at least seemingly so. On the upper right hand corner of the screen, almost like a hole punch, sits the front facing camera of the phone. Now, while its not immediately intrusive – mostly thanks to wallpapers and software settings- it does kind of just sit there. It is very likely that this new “hole punch” camera in the middle of the screen won’t operate well with many app interfaces, and these will need to fixed in updates later on.

As a Samsung user for the last 5 years, I have to say, I am a little disappointed by this new look. Samsung’s main clap-back to the Iphone for the last two years was by being relatively notch-less. It made quite a few ads making fun of the Iphone X’s notch and how in the way  of the screen it was. It seems almost hypocritical now that there is a literal hole on the screen, getting in the way of what you are supposed to be seeing. I haven’t tried the phone out myself, but I think i prefer the look of the s9. While it did have a small bezel, its quite hard to notice and doesn’t obstruct the screen in any way.

If Samsung truly wanted to go bezel-less, I believe the way to go would have been motorized front facing cameras. Much like the Vivo Nex S and the Oppo Find X. The motorized front camera is almost seamless with the phone, but it also adds an almost futuristic aspect to it. I enjoyed using such phones’ front facing cameras as they felt like something out of Star Trek. Why Samsung decided to go with the hole punch instead is beyond me.
