Time to Lego of Your IPad

Remember the days when kids would play with those amazing little bricks called Legos? This was back before every child had their own IPad to play games like Angry Birds. Well, with the use of augmented reality and API’s, Team Filip Denker and Peter Papp may have created a solution that will have kids put down the IPad and pick up the IPhone instead (it’s a good thing, trust me).

My Bricks Online is a tool that came out of the TechCrunch Disrupt London hackathon. What exactly is the tool and how will it help with the addiction of IPad usage that kids suffer from today? By downloading this tool on your smart device (i.e. a smartphone), you can augment your Lego creations by giving them sounds based on the colors of the bricks used. This opens up a world of possibilities for kids, and even adults.

This hack was created to persuade kids to put down the electronics they’ve become so addicted to today. It definitely attracts me to pull out the old Legos and start building to explore all the amazing possibilities. This idea is a gateway to multiple other possibilities. If this was done with Legos, it can also be used for other non-electronic activities in the future. Do you think this is a good idea, and do you think it can replace those IPads for Legos?

Snapbot Pop-up

snapchat-spectacles

As our dear Nittany Lions climb the ranks of the college football world, capturing our attention, Snapchat is using the ranks of college football to capture the attention of this same collegiate world.

Snapchat has had Spectacle vending machines pop up randomly over the past few weeks, and the most recent vendor appeared in Pasadena, next to the Rose Bowl Stadium. Past locations have been Venice Beach, Big Sur, Tulsa, and Santa Monica. This marketing scheme has kept the Snapchat faithful on their toes for sure.

snapchat-spectacles

What exactly are Snapchat Spectacles though? Entering the wearable technology market, these smart glasses, that don’t look very smart, are a way of linking up your Snapchat with your first-person views. The glasses will record a clip of whatever you are looking at, and transmit it to your phone for you to send to your friends on social media.

This is a very great strategy by Snapchat. The Tech Crunch article I looked at points out how huge football games will draw huge crowds, and that people tend to share more when they’re at a big event, such as a college football game. I know whenever I am standing in Beaver Stadium singing “Sweet Caroline,” my phone is out swaying with me as Snapchat allows my friends to experience the moment with me.

Would you get a pair of these kooky spectacles? I’m not entirely sure if I would, but I would love to hear what your views on this smart-wear are.

Wearable Wear Down

In the midst of the age of wearable technology, the Intel Corporation is laying off a major portion of its wearable department. What does this mean for the wearable industry? With products like Google Glass, Snapchat Spectacles, and third party smart watches not being as popular in an Apple Watch/Fitbit dominated wearable market, it would interesting to see Intel try to stay in the game with a smaller team.

Tech Crunch made an update in their article by quoting Intel in saying that, “Intel is in no way stepping back from the wearable business. In fact, we have several products in the works that we are very excited about, as well as prior launches that highlight our wearable technology such as the TAG Heuer Connected watch and recent Oakley Radar Pace smart eyewear.”

Intel is very certain that their wearable department can compete in such an Apple/Fitbit smart watch dominated market. I personally don’t think that Intel will be able to survive in this market (being that I had to Google what the Oakley Radar Pace eyewear was). Not only that, but with the large amount of layoffs in the department, products that might have had a chance to be successful, such as the Basis Ruby, will never see the light of day.

As of now, Intel has been set back significantly. Based on the company’s domination in other markets, I find it difficult to believe that they will worry too much about the wearable department. I think Intel will be out of the wearable game in a few years, but I would like to hear what you have to say on the matter. Could Intel come back and put the Apple Watch and other high-end wearables to shame?

Retro Game Comeback

Recently a miniature version of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was released for sale for a beautiful price of $60. Gamers young and old rejoiced at the news of this product going on the market. Its classic design and interface made the kid in everyone come out like it did during its original release period years ago.

First, a little more information about the product before diving into the blog. The NES Classic Edition released with a set game library of the hits from the past. It is a smaller version of the original system, and is a lot cheaper. The original system can currently be found online for various prices, all very high.

In class we discussed video games when talking about design and interface. In a time of 3-D gaming and Virtual Reality headsets coming to fruition, some classic 8-bit action. I personally love that this little guy came back on the market. Although this might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

The product sold out on Amazon in a matter of seconds upon its release. Why is it that this classic game console sold out in seconds, when the more recent VR headsets will not reach the point of selling out in a year? I think it is the joy of the simplistic controls from the pre-2000 gaming era. It may also be the difficulty of the games that isn’t as common anymore.

Tech Crunch says that Nintendo will be releasing more of the product in time. “There will be a steady flow” says Nintendo. This steady flow will be necessary to keep up with consumer demand (which is very high).

As I said, I love the retro design and interface that comes with the tiny console. Are you more of a retro gamer or not? Are you a gamer at all? If not, or if so, let me know why. I’d love to hear what you have to say about this little console.

Social Media is Killing Its Users

like

What happens when one minute someone is alive, and the next they aren’t? There is nothing worse then going onto Facebook and learning that your best friend has died… or so you think.

facebookdead

Recently Facebook has added a memorial aspect to its interface that will allow users to remember their friends who have passed away. In class we have discussed social media; what it is designed for and how it affects people. Logging on to find a friend is dead out of the blue is something that plays with our emotions. It affects the human mind.

In an article on Tech Crunch, the writer of an article on this matter showed the above picture of his co-worker, saying that he was not actually dead. Rather, Facebook had an error in its algorithm. For some reason, it was killing members of its social network who were not actually dead. How can we as a society trust social media when it is still so flawed? Not only did it kill off writers from a tech blog company, but it also knocked off its creator, Mark Zuckerberg.

zuck-dead

Social media is a drug that consumes us all in its addiction. It is not a bad thing. Allowing friends from one end of the globe to stay in touch with each other is something magnificent. There is no doubt in my mind that we as a society need social media. We are social creatures. It does get concerning, however, that we depend on it so much in our daily lives.

When I get home from a long day of class and scroll down my Twitter news feed, if I see a tweet in regards to someone famous or close passing, I immediately check every other source. My first source is not Google. If on Twitter I will immediately go to Facebook to confirm the information. This is where Facebook’s error can become very concerning. Social media can change the world around us.

Do you find yourself doing what I do? Is social media your go-to source of information? Does your social media findings alter your perception of reality? Let’s hear what you have to say in the comments.

Board of Startups?

Creating a startup can be difficult. In class we discussed we business models and the startup development phase. A key part of that development phase is getting a board of directors. It’s an essential part of any business (seriously, the law demands it), so not having one will be the downfall of any startup. The board can be as small as one person, but it does have to be there!

boardofdirectors

“But Matt, why do we need to start a board?” Well the board handles the important things involved with your company, including stock and other financial matters. You may also ask why you need a board when you can handle the finances and stock yourself. Well that’s the beauty of being able to have one member on the board, because that one member could be you. You’ll learn that as a company grows, however, the board will grow with it. The board is the GPS of the company. They are responsible for where the company goes, and what the company decides when it comes to “the big picture.”

cash

Do you know a little company called Apple? Well in the past, the board of directors played a key part in the growth of the company. When they fired their founder, Steve Jobs, it caused new competition to come into the game in the form of NeXT, a company founded by Jobs. The board of Apple decided to buy NeXT and place Jobs back on the board, leading the company to be what it is today.

next-logo-paul-rand

The board of directors is the corporate backbone. Who you have on the board matters, as seen in the case of Apple. They are not perfect and problems will arise, but in the long run, the board is the company. Since all major decisions pass through the board, it is only there for the good of the company.

What is your take on this intricate part of startups? Do you agree or disagree with having a board and if you were to have one, would it start out being only you? Would you even be on your board? I’d love to hear what you have to say.

Winter is Coming…and So Are the AI Wars

Watch out Alexa, there’s a new AI entering the internet of things and entering our homes. With the new release of the Google Home, Google has found another part of our lives to satisfy. What is the Google Home exactly? Similar to Amazon’s Echo/Dot, Home is a small device that responds to commands, such as “play song.” It also connects to your home network, giving you an arsenal of media sources.

You may be wondering what the difference between the Echo and the Home may be. What is Google doing to take over the market of “AI home companions?” Besides the fact that its AI is the Google Assistant (great name), the Home’s intelligence is linked to the cloud. It may not sound like much at first, but when you look into what that means for the Assistant, it means plenty. By having its intelligence in the cloud, Google Assistant can only get smarter over time. This could mean that the Google Home will be here to stay for a while.

The product itself stacks up well to Amazon’s mogul in the home AI industry. A reviewer from TechCrunch said that the voice commands worked just as well as those for Alexa. Saying, “OK, Google” from a different room worked better than saying, “Alexa.” The sound quality of the Home is just right as well. Goldilocks would probably say it’s not too loud, not too soft, but that it’s just right.

As of now, the Home’s app capabilities are not as large as Alexa, but that’s the beauty of the cloud and having the name “Google” attached to it. Eventually the Home will be completely caught up to the Echo, but will it surpass the queen of AI? I’d like to hear what you have to say. #TeamAlexa or #TeamAssistant?google-homeamazon-echo
