Retro Game Comeback

Recently a miniature version of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was released for sale for a beautiful price of $60. Gamers young and old rejoiced at the news of this product going on the market. Its classic design and interface made the kid in everyone come out like it did during its original release period years ago.

First, a little more information about the product before diving into the blog. The NES Classic Edition released with a set game library of the hits from the past. It is a smaller version of the original system, and is a lot cheaper. The original system can currently be found online for various prices, all very high.

In class we discussed video games when talking about design and interface. In a time of 3-D gaming and Virtual Reality headsets coming to fruition, some classic 8-bit action. I personally love that this little guy came back on the market. Although this might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

The product sold out on Amazon in a matter of seconds upon its release. Why is it that this classic game console sold out in seconds, when the more recent VR headsets will not reach the point of selling out in a year? I think it is the joy of the simplistic controls from the pre-2000 gaming era. It may also be the difficulty of the games that isn’t as common anymore.

Tech Crunch says that Nintendo will be releasing more of the product in time. “There will be a steady flow” says Nintendo. This steady flow will be necessary to keep up with consumer demand (which is very high).

As I said, I love the retro design and interface that comes with the tiny console. Are you more of a retro gamer or not? Are you a gamer at all? If not, or if so, let me know why. I’d love to hear what you have to say about this little console.
