Content and Organization

Understanding Heritage (HL) and Non-heritage Language Learners (NHLL) focuses specifically on students enrolled in Arabic, Korean, and Russian language courses at the college-level, which typically are composed of this mixed population.

We organized the resource into five five strands, in which we explore:

  • the learners’ backgrounds and their prior experiences learning another language;
  • their perceptions of what it means to be a heritage or non-heritage language learner;
  • their motivation for language study;
  • their perspectives on their strengths/weaknesses as language learners; and
  • their plans for the future.

Users will find these five strands as tabs on the horizontal menu.

After working through the cases, users can deepen their understanding by working through the Explorations Section. It provides tasks and activities that LCTL instructors can implement to help them meet the challenges of teaching both heritage and domestic language learners in the same classroom. They are also useful for instructors who are seeking to create effectual learning communities in such classrooms. The Explorations Sections can be found in the left sidebar.
